When I was working in a public high school, I had new immigrant Grade 9 girls come and express concerns of being discriminated and stereotyped as “ref’. A derogatory word used against newcomers to Canada meaning ‘refugees’. The girls felt discriminated, offended, intimidated and vulnerable. With the help of an Intern Social Worker, I implemented a once a week all girls social group. This was a discrimination issue amongst the girls in the school, the boys had no problem. I had a very large group of girls show interest and participated. I started engaging the girls in conversation where I would ask what does ‘ref’ mean and why were they using it. I discovered that some of the girls used it because it was used against them when they were newcomers
At the school the school staff was provided with ongoing awareness and education on how to eliminate prejudice and discrimination in the school. Educational and awareness workshops were developed and implemented for the students and their parents. To accommodate the parents they were delivered in the evenings or weekends, childcare for younger children and meals were provided. The school environment changed after two years of continuous education and awareness. The school also implemented a non-tolerance bullying, racism and discrimination
Oskamp (2000) stats that it is essential to understand where prejudice is coming from in order to tackle and address it. In the High School we were able to address where it was coming from and were able to control it.
Prejudice is mostly expressed in the home environment (Stonewall, Valentine & McDonald, 2004). It is therefore very important to think about a family or a home as the focus of prejudice reduction initiative, perhaps offer support groups for parents to be educated (Stonewall, Valentine & McDonald, 2004).
Children learn prejudice from a very early age and school based interventions have proved to be very successful (Aboud & Fenwick, 2002).
With a lot of education and awareness prejudice and discrimination can be reduced if not eliminated entirely. Education and awareness should be implemented in kindergarten to educate children from an early age, at work place, places of worships, social gatherings and a global initiative. Leaders from different faith groups should be educated, teachers and all employees at
