Prejudice is the thought process of negative and hostile judgments formed before the action is committed against a certain group of individuals. Discrimination is the actions of unfair treatment against certain people that single them out. Discrimination are usually based on certain characteristics of a certain group based on their age, ethnicity, race, religion, sexual orientation etc. Examples of discrimination in society in general usually involve individuals that have sexual relations with their same gender. Current day, society usually go against of stay away trying to single out the individuals who have relations and interest in the same sex. In Yonkers the population of Hispanics in the community is about thirty-five percent. There is eighteen percent of Spanish speakers in Yonkers that do not know how to speak English nor know how to read and write English. In the police departments of Yonkers there are eighty-six percent of white police officers. The rest of the fourteen percent are filled with a five percent of black officers, about eight percent of Hispanics, and just a little over one percent are Asian officers. For the changes to become a more diverse policing environment Westchester county has been having representatives travel throughout the county to churches and career fairs to help encourage men and women to law enforcement. I believe the more law enforcement departments are filled with a diverse environment the more Hispanics and black people would join the job due to the more diverse the job is, not by having a white dominate working staff. The employment of a diverse police work force can be a succeeding for law enforcement officials for being able to meet language barriers. Being more diverse in police departments can lead up to having more officers that have the ability to work with different types of people. I believe it would be unfair to prohibit gay and lesbians employment just because of the interest in their own sex. Their social statues should not be the problem or effect the different types of jobs they could get. As long as they are professional like police officers should be to protect society there should not be a problem. Police subcultural puts a base for police officers to should act and behave by. As a police officer you have to put aside your beliefs, values, and religion, to be able to treat everyone fairly. Also as an officer you have to respect and protect society from harm in an orderly manner.
