When you think of video game player, do you think of a guy sitting alone while staring at a screen, maybe even in a basement? Would you be shocked to hear that the previous assumption is not exactly true anymore? Of course, there are still some gamers who prefer to play alone, but most game players play in groups, whether online or while in the same room. There are even games where it is almost required to have multiple players, like World of Warcraft! Playing in groups raises the enjoyment of the game itself, even if that group happens to all be playing single player games. Tournaments take playing video games in groups to the next level with a competitive feel and learning new moves by watching other players. Not only that, but playing in competitions also brings the players closer together, and sometimes allows for a ceasefire of sorts between enemies. I have personally played in a number of Smash Bros tournaments, and each is thrilling, not only to play the game itself, but because I get to hang out with friends and learn new tricks for next time. Competitions itself bring a lot to the table. In these cases they have a value in themselves (Neiburger 1). By this, they mean the social simulation, the vast amount of entertainment from both playing and watching, proving you are better than your friends, and also mastery of the game itself (Neiburger 1). These events are how some gamers stay in touch with others, sometimes including myself (Novak 242). Some of the people there are people I used to be good friends with, but circumstances made it so I stopped seeing them around. My good friend Richy is one of them. We used to be really good friends in elementary school. Then in the process of going into middle school, we got on different
Lastly, in youth competitive sports you can learn how to win and lose politely, which is important to the feelings of your competitors. Even though teens can learn these skills in school and in their household, competitive sports provide another way for children to interact and experience how to use life skills in the real world. Another example from the article, “ Pros and Cons of Sports Competition at the Highschool Level,” it
Video games have completely changed childhoods of many children across the globe. A video game involves visual feedback from a TV or computer monitor. Ever since the 1970s, video games have continuously improved by improving the graphics and sound. During the 1970s, there were many arcade games that were not advanced compared to today’s games. By 2016, video games are produced in three-dimensional imaging and are incredibly realistic. For example, Madden 2016 is a football game based on all the athletes in the National Football League. The graphics from Madden 2000 to Madden 2016, have improved drastically due to technology. Therefore, video game creators make billons of dollars by selling them to individuals across the world. However, there
Back in the day, gamers would use dials and keyboards to move simple two-dimensional shapes across a tiny pixelated screen. Since then, forty years later, friends and family are able to play together in ultra realistic virtual realities. Games are no longer only played by geeky teenage boys spending the day at an arcade. Video games are now for men, women, boys, and girls of all ages. According to a survey taken by 23 participants at McHenry County College on April 22 2014, 96% of them have played video games before, 61% play video games weekly, and 9 of the 16 women surveyed currently play video games. These results show that not only are video games extremely prevalent in modern day life, contrary to popular belief, a good portion of women play them as well. Many different types of personalities play video games as well. Video games are no longer an activity only desired by introverts. Not since the internet has allowe...
In today’s society, video games have played a huge part in the children and teen demographic. Revolutionizing the future, popular titles have implemented realistic values and experiences to players all around the world. As the quality of graphics improve and the plot thickens, so does the violence, gore, and bloodshed. Individuals who devote countless hours staring at the television screen trying to triumph the top high score and levels do not realize the amount damage and violent acts they are causing whether it is secluded in a virtual world or to their brains. Simulating unarmed fist fights, gun shootings, and war could lead to aggression and actual real-life violent conduct. Violent actions and behaviors in these titles could also desensitize
With competition, people have incentive to improve. Last fall, my father had the idea for the two of us to have a competition and see who could do more sit-ups by the end of the year. This would be part of my offseason baseball training and his normal exercise. We were both doing hundreds of sit-ups a day, and I eventually won. In the end, we were both the winners because this was very good exercise for our body, which probably would not have been done without the competition. At the end of each of my basketball lessons, my coach and I would play a short game of one versus one. At first, he would always win. I grew tired of always losing to
The average person who plays video games regularly is thirty-three years old (Issitt). This topic is important because video games have been given an unfair stereotype. Video games have the stereotype of taking over the lives of teenagers and making them violent. However, the benefits of video games outweigh the negatives.
Carl Becker “Ideal Democracy” says that people spent so much time trying to sway others to our own way of thinking that we fail to see that working together and compromising could yield much better results. For example “In a May 12, 2000, CNN interview on The World Today, Doug Lowenstein, president of the Inter- active Digital Software Association, said, “I think the issue has been vastly overblown and overstated, often by politicians and others who don’t fully understand, frankly, this industry. There is absolutely no evidence, none, that playing a violent video game leads to aggressive behavior.” (Anderson 353). This means that people just talk without having background information of what is going on and not automatically blaming it on violent video
Confucius once said, "he who does not do well is less guilty than he who pushes too hard." People found that competitive sports are often physically straining and it is detrimental to proper emotional development. This blows away the misconception that competitive sports create a healthy and engaging atmosphere for kids. This and an overly strong obsession with winning create a toxic mix for the child’s wellbeing. People have begun to realize the world of competitive may be doing more harm than good for their children. Parents have also begun to notice that competitive sports often injure their children severely and also make the child feel left out, which in turn is detrimental to the child 's emotional health. Therefore, competitive sports
American educational philosopher John Dewey once said, “ Education is not preparation for life; education is life itself.” Education is the foundation of a permanent lifestyle. Parents should desire for their children to have educational stability to build upon. Any concerned parent should want nothing but the best for their child as they are well aware of the new forms of child entertainment. Since the late 1970’s and early 1980’s, children in the United States have become subject to a new type of entertainment: video gaming (Nickson, 2010). Video games have become a big part of the average American household. Parents have begun to wonder how video games are affecting their children’s lifestyles.
Video games have been around about 50 years and they contribute a big part of the U.S. economy. People interact with video games every day throughout different ways, such as cell phone devices, computers, consoles or whatever which has a screen on it. In fact, it has always affected people’s lives. However, not so many people understand the benefits of video games. With video games, people can not only relieve themselves from stress and suffering, but it also improves people’s social experiences while they are exchanging and absorbing knowledge with other people; more than that, people can learn many other things from video games which can help them to achieve great things in lives.
The topic of games is vast, and encompasses more than just video games. There are table top games similar to Monopoly or card games, organized sports are considered games, and even children make up games to play with their friends like tag and hide and seek. Video games like Farmville and Wii sports have 60-65 million players, and games like Monopoly can boast 250 million players world wide. (cite needed) Indeed half a billion people spend at least an hour playing games online everyday, and 183 million if you count the U.S. alone.(McGonigal) Considering the numbers it should come to no surprise that games have the ability to reach millions of people.
Far too soon, a few children are singled out for their athletic promise. . ." ( 239). I believe competition is beneficial because children learn that outcomes are often determined by one 's effort. Life affords many opportunities that may result in disappointment. Children that participate in competitive sports learn how to deal with disappointment without being consumed by it. Statsky also made the point that parents and coaches take the fun out of playing and focus primarily on competing. When I began playing sports, no record was kept of the score. I remember team members asking, "Did we win?". Therefore, I believe that even small children understand that games are developed to be won or

Social networking has even made its way into the video game industry with online gaming. Video games, especially those that contain violence, are becoming increasingly popular with college students. They are often considered a bellwether of Internet use, but the Internet is not the only technology they have incorporated into everyday life. They are also using other technologies like cell phones, mp3 players and other devices to entertain themselves wherever they may be but still, they are more interested on videogames that internet offers.
