Those who practice AI believe that each individual has its own characteristics that contribute to the team. This creates a positive environment where individuals can feel open to sharing. Appreciative inquiry allows teammates to create lasting bonds with one other, whereas, problem centered approach many individuals feel like they don’t set up relationships with their leader nor team members. AI also gives individuals the chance for them to open up about their own goals and dreams which in return makes them excited about the work they are producing. The organization must know themselves, the individuals that work for them, and the reality that exist. This goes along with the idea of the Poetic Principle. It is one of many theories that are used to understand Appreciative Inquiry but, to me, it is the most important stage leading into the 4D cycle. An organization cannot reach the first discovery stage without the right attitude towards each individual and their value. The Poetic Principle believes that in story between the individual and the organization. The two can build off one another in order to gather information to create a better further; it may be facts, feelings, or experiences coming from the members. This gives the organization in opportunity to really look at itself, the people, and evaluate what they really want. (Fifolt, Lander, 2013, p. 21).
