A psychiatrist is a medical doctor, or a physician, who specializes in psychiatry. Psychiatry is involved in the diagnosis, prevention, study, and treatment of mental, emotional, and behavioral problems. Psychiatrists help patients function better in life. They often treat problems like losing touch with reality, being irritable, being flustered, mild anxiety, and severe disorders. Psychiatrists also treat destructive behaviors like, abusing alcohol, abusing drugs, and committing crimes. Psychiatrists work with people who can’t distinguish between real life and fantasy. They can also diagnose mental retardation. Psychiatrists work with psychologists, occupational therapists, and psychiatric nurses. They can ask family for any history of mental disorders, prescriptions, or physical disabilities. They can order tests like a physical evaluation, brain imaging, or blood testing, to see what’s going on under the surface. If they see fit, they can prescribe medicine.
