Psychiatrist
A psychiatrist is a medical doctor, or a physician, who specializes in psychiatry. Psychiatry is involved in the diagnosis, prevention, study, and treatment of mental, emotional, and behavioral problems. Psychiatrists help patients function better in life. They often treat problems like losing touch with reality, being irritable, being flustered, mild anxiety, and severe disorders. Psychiatrists also treat destructive behaviors like, abusing alcohol, abusing drugs, and committing crimes. Psychiatrists work with people who can’t distinguish between real life and fantasy. They can also diagnose mental retardation. Psychiatrists work with psychologists, occupational therapists, and psychiatric nurses. They can ask family for any history of mental disorders, prescriptions, or physical disabilities. They can order tests like a physical evaluation, brain imaging, or blood testing, to see what’s going on under the surface. If they see fit, they can prescribe medicine. Each deal with a vastly different thing. Behavior therapists work by using the carrot-and-stick method, which is the use of a reward and punishment to achieve a good behavior from the patient. Psychotherapists use talking therapy, which is basically just talking out problems with patients. Psychoanalysts have a method where the patient talks without the help, or guide, from the psychiatrists called free associate. The child psychiatrist works by playing and talking with the child and just talking with their parents. There is a psychiatrist that works with businesses to help employees deal with alcoholism and absenteeism. The last type of psychiatrists is a forensic psychiatrist. Psychiatric hospitals, also known as mental hospitals and mental asylums, are hospitals or wards specializing in the treatment of serious psychiatric diseases, such as clinical depression, schizophrenia, and bipolar disorder. Psychiatric hospitals vary widely in their size and grading. Some hospitals may specialize only in short-term or outpatient therapy for low-risk patients. Others may specialize in the temporary or permanent care of residents who, as a result of a psychological disorder, require routine assistance, treatment, or a specialized and controlled environment. Patients are often admitted on a voluntary basis, but people whom psychiatrists believe may pose a significant danger to themselves or others may be subject to involuntary commitment.

Mental illness have been part of humans for many years. Some mental illness can be hidden, while others can be seen a mile away. Schizophrenia for example, is a mental illness that can be easy to conceal. "Schizophrenia is a chronic, disabling mental illness whose symptoms can include hallucinations, delusions and cognitive problems, the illness afflicts about 1 percent of the human population...." (Shnabel). It means that there are people around the world that hear things and see things that not many people can, not knowing what the difference between real and fake is. The purpose of jail is to control criminals, decrease crime rates, decrease recidivism, and by the end of the inmate 's sentencing individuals are expected to return to society as if everything were “normal”. However, the majority of individuals who are incarcerated is because they did not pay fines, they were not able to post bail, or because they have a mental health diagnosis. Who knew jails were the new models of psychiatric facilities. It’s been proven that people with mental illness often experience worsened symptoms, recidivism, and abuse while incarcerated. Which poses the question of is jail the place individuals with a mental health diagnosis should be?

Clinical psychologists can treat a wide range of patients, from mental disorders to emotional problems. Mental health nurses, also called psychiatric nurses, provide support and care to people with emotional and mental disorders.” (Career Cruising) Depending on where people choose to work in mental health nursing, the duties vary; many have common goals for themselves, and their patients. “The nurses try to keep their patients safe, help them adjust to their environment, and as much as possible, help them regain their mental health. Nurses do all these things by observing, assessing, and reporting on their patients’ conditions, and by providing therapeutic care and treatment to the patients.”
What is a pediatrician? Pediatricians are doctors who specialize and focus in caring for babies to young adults (Career Cruising). They deal with childhood diseases and the care of infants with health and sickness (Elberts). The typical upper age limit of patients is from age twelve to age twenty-one (NetMed Pediatrics). They have to treat their patients as if he or she were going to change the world. Pediatricians complete many tasks in a day’s time. They perform physical exams and order tests that will diagnose diseases and injuries that have occurred. They advise surgery and medications and may also help patients through puberty and family problems (Career Cruising). It is their responsibility to make sure the patients are not only healthy, but also safe and happy. Some pediatricians communicate with social workers, family members, and health care workers to understand the entire situation as best as they can (Career Cruising). If the patient seems to have more personal problems, pediatricians have the opportunity to send them to other doctors like a psychiatrist for treatment. Others work as advocates by educating the community about car safety and the benefits from school breakfast (Career Cruising).
Psychiatrists provide treatment to patients is different than that of most other physicians. They must not only diagnose and treat their patients medically, but must also make sure that the patient is not a threat to themselves or anyone else. They will meet with patients on regular basis; this could be bi-weekly, weekly, or two or more times a week. A psychiatrist must get to know their patients, and learn everything about them. By doing this, they can evaluate their situation and give advice and support accordingly. The psychiatrist would usually start off by doing a thorough history of the patient; documenting any information that may be relevant. Upon noticing an individual exhibiting a mental disorder, do you establish them as crazy, sociopathic or murderous? Or would you consider them being rather gentle, perfectly acceptable humans in our modern day society? Having to believe that they are outcasts in our society would bring up the well-known stereotypes, which classify them as having mental disorders. Not only are mental disorders looked upon differently but are also not easily accepted into today’s society. In fact, almost every mental disorder has a stereotype behind it, making it hard for many people to apprehend it. Ones that have minimum knowledge about these human afflictions choose to have negative opinions regarding them. Therefore people are easily lured into the assumptions of these disorders being adverse. Schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, and personality disorders are a mere selection of the many stereotyped mental disorders that are viewed upon as fugitive amidst the norm of society, personally I believe that they should be treated as normal human beings.
Ever since I was in middle school I was fascinated by the world of psychology. The thought of being able to get into someone’s mind by merely speaking them through it intrigued me terribly and I was just so amazed by all of the different areas of it I didn’t know for a couple of years what I wanted to do in that field specifically, but I knew I was meant to be a psychologist of some sorts. I knew I was meant to help people with their mental issues and illnesses in the way I was helped which eventually led me to clinical psychology. “Clinical psychology is the branch of psychology concerned with the assessment and treatment of mental illness, abnormal behavior and psychiatric problems.” (Cherry, Kendra. "Clinical Psychology - What Is Clinical Psychology”) To sum it up, a clinical psychologist is someone who diagnoses people to help them find out what issue they have mentally; like how a doctor would diagnose a patient with a physical disease I would be helping a patient with their mental ailment. To do this I will have to go through many years of schooling but I know in the end it will be worth it if I can have a worthwhile career such as this one.

The fact that the media is one of the most influential elements of today 's world often has dangerous consequences. Speaking specifically, its ability to greatly control the manner in which a specific topic is discussed can ultimately be harmful to a select group of individuals. This is the case with society 's discussion of mental health issues. In today’s world, in which cases of mental illness are becoming increasingly common, the way in which the media, particular television, shapes society’s thoughts and opinions on this topic has dire effects. Inaccurate or unrepresentative portrayals of mental health issues in prime time television programs negatively affects how society discusses the topic, as it aids in the establishment of stigmas.
