Philosophy is arguably the key to how humans have learned to create what society has become today. Throughout history, many philosophers argued about issues like religion, morality, language, politics, and just about anything you can think of. Philosophy has effected everyone for thousands of years, so it is likely that Philosophy has the ability to both benefit and set a disadvantage at some point. Though it all depends on the person that it is effecting. This is where philosophy is integrated. While solely religion can effect somebody’s personal beliefs in what is right and wrong, often times it is only philosophy that can truly define why somebody believes something is right and wrong. For example, election years. Many different presidential candidates compete in order to become the representative of their selected political affiliation, which is usually democratic or republican. There are many beliefs tied into both of these political parties that go into what they understand as right or wrong. While representatives have the ability to differentiate between what they believe is right or wrong, most general ideas remain the same. This is directly linked to the two benefits that I discussed earlier, since each of them have allowed me to become more educated on those certain topics such as my personal beliefs and my ability to be open-minded. Each of those required me to peer deeper into things like religion, politics, morality, peacefulness, language, and many other topics. Philosophy has made this a benefit in my personal life because I was required to do my own research and interpret things in my own way rather than listen to what people tell me to believe in or understand things the way other people understand them. Not only do I find this to be the major benefit of philosophy in my life, but in the lives of every cognizant being. For example, since philosophy has provided me with an intellectual advantage, I can use this to assist me in an argument. I can use factual evidence that I had previously learned to debunk or rebuttal somebody’s argument against me, or I can use personal experience that I have interpreted through my use of philosophy to reject something false or wrong that somebody may use toward me. This is all thanks to how philosophy has given me my own intellectual advantage, while I may not win every argument, I can take what I have learned and use it to my advantage in many areas.
