This discussion reminds me of the time that I helped my niece with her homework after her mother would get frustrated that she did not understand how to solve First grade math problems. This is where differentiated instruction and DAP come into action as each child learning differently and where a teacher or parent should remain composed even if you get frustrated. Differentiated instruction provides children with numerous options when learning fresh information, while Developmental Appropriate Practices is where we use the knowledge about how children develop to construct learning programs that are suitable for both their age and mental development.

Cloran (n.d.) suggest teachers need to have a broad understanding of giftedness and learning disabilities, a variety of identification measures and the ability to modify the curriculum and implement differentiated teaching strategies to meet the unique needs of all students. This essay will discuss the terms differentiated learnnig and personalised learning as well as highlight how these two forms of learning can be implemented in the classroom. Differentiated learning can be defined as an instruction that is an individualised process of teaching and learning that is based on the learners’ prior knowledge, abilities, development readiness, interests and learning styles (Grierson & Woloshyn, 2012). On the other hand personalised learning involves creating an individual learning plan to meet the needs of a particular student. In addition personalised learning does not mean teaching each child individually but trying to cater in several ways for the variety of children you have in the class (Dean, 2006).
Common core is not a new method. America has set standards since at least the 1950’s and many schools have since then implemented a curriculum supporting this ideal. These standards in language arts and mathematics are supposed to help the nation prepare students for college and their future careers. Currently I am co teaching a fifth grade class of eleven students. The class is a general education class with four students who have disabilities. My main focus for the class is teaching the human body system and implementing writing into the class. Differentiation of instruction is something we need to show that we are implanting in our classroom. There are four levels of differentiation of instruction; content, process, product, and affect. What we teach, how we teach it; how students demonstrate what they have learned, and how students feel about what they are learning is what DI is about. Educators need to start by choosing the best content that will help all of their students. The content not only has to relate to the subject matter, but need to connect to their culture. The process is also a crucial component of DI and Santamaria feels that the best thing to do for the students is having them work in groups, but Utley took an individual approach to DI. It does not seem like a big deal at the time, but spanking does have long term effects that can affect the child even when he or she is a adult. Spanking whether it is appropriate for parents or any guardian of a child should be allowed to spank their child or not. Again, everyone does not learn the same way. Some students are visual learners and others are hands on learners and some may be both, it just depends on the student. You just have to take time, as a teacher, to learn your students learning style and keep those in mind as you plan your lessons. With this being said, the education system may be in trouble today, but that does not mean that students are not learning anything. They are still learning, but just not a lot of book sense. Students today are more interested and focused on learning “street smarts”, as my mother would say. They are quick to get a job at 16, purchase a cellphone, laptop, car, and a fashionable clothing line. All of which, may be important now, but will not help them to be successful adults.
