REVIEW ON SOME POPULAR METHODS OF IMAGE SEGMENTATION Ria Pal, Rima Das, Payel Bose, Kasturee Saha, Tsheten Yanki Bhutia Information Technology, 4th Year, 8th Semester, Jalpaiguri Government Engineering College 1. ABSTRACT One of the most important components in image analysis and many computer vision tasks is Image segmentation. The problem related to efficient segmentation in still images is of great practical importance in image editing. It has been a great interest of research for a very long time and still is. The common tools used by classical image segmentation includes texture, colour or edge (contrast) information. With the growing interest of image segmentation, this paper gives a brief overview about image segmentation and the …show more content…
Some of the important applications of image segmentation are face detection, face recognition, finger print recognition. Practical application of image segmentation includes filtering of noisy images, medical applications such as locating tumours, measuring tissue volumes, computer guided surgery, diagnosis, treatment planning, study of anatomical structure. Image segmentation also helps to locate objects in satellite images (roads, forests, etc.). Many segmentation methods have been proposed but the choice of the method depends on the type image and the characteristics of the problems related to that particular …show more content…
Image segmentation algorithms like edge detection, line detection, and point detection are included. 3.1 Edge based segmentation- In many image processing applications, edge plays a very important role. They provide an outline of the object. An edge is a set of connected pixels which lies on the boundary between two regions that differ in grey value. Those pixels are known as Edge points which are on the edge. An edge is usually extracted by computing the derivative of the image function. To identify the discontinuities in the image, edges are detected. By identifying the pixel value and then comparing it with the neighbouring pixels, edges on the region can be traced. To classify this, they use both fixed and adaptive feature of Support Vector Machine (SVM). There is no need for the detected edges to be closed in this edge based segmentation. There are various edge detectors that are used to segment the image. A layout of an object is given by the edges which are the discontinuities in the sense of intensity. All objects in the image are traced when the intensities are calculated
This work contains motivating thoughts for example, when a viewer tries to outline the figure/ground balance between the positive and negative space, it catches the attention of viewers and helps them to find out the theme, the letter between the three rectangles. Each art element works in tandem with the principles of design. For instance, actual lines and lines created by edges create asymmetrical balance, directional forces, contrast, and rhythm. The straight lines on the bottom help draw attention away from the jagged, overlapped edge lines, suggesting asymmetrical balance, while the jagged, overlapped edge lines create the 'paths', as stated in the textbook, for the audience to view as directional forces. Both types of lines provide a contrast and rhythm easy enough to identify as the shape of the lines and placement of multiple versions of each are seen in the painting.
Retinal vessel segmentation is important for the diagnosis of numerous eye diseases and plays an important role in automatic retinal disease screening systems. Automatic segmentation of retinal vessels and characterization of morphological attributes such as width, length, tortuosity, branching pattern and angle are utilized for the diagnosis of different cardiovascular and ophthalmologic diseases. Manual segmentation of retinal blood vessels is a long and tedious task which also requires training and skill. It is commonly accepted by the medical community that automatic quantification of retinal vessels is the first step in the development of a computer-assisted diagnostic system for ophthalmic disorders. A large number of algorithms for retinal vasculature segmentation have been proposed. The algorithms can be classified as pattern recognition techniques, matched filtering, vessel tracking, mathematical morphology, multiscale approaches, and model based approaches. The first paper on retinal blood vessel segmentation appeared in 1989 by Chaudhuri et al. [21]...

Mammography plays a vital role in early detection of breast cancers because it can show abnormalities in the breast up to two years before a patient or physician can feel them. The digital mammogram is analyzed with a combination of general image processing and computer vision algorithms combined with procedures which have been specially designed for the application. Mammography has provided reliable parameters for detecting breast tumor. Masses and calcifications are the most general breast deformities that may specify the occurrence of breast cancer. The other symptoms of breast cancer are architectural distortion and bilateral asymmetry, etc., Breast abnormalities are defined by an extensive range of features and may be easily overlooked or wrongly interpreted by radiologists while appraising large number of mammography images made available in screening programs. CAD and Computer Aided Diagnosis (CADX) tools are being designed to help the radiologists for providing an accurate diagnosis. CAD and CADX algorithms lend a hand in reducing the number of FPs and they help radiologists to make better decisions. This chapter gives a review of image processing algorithms that have been developed for detection of breast cancer.

The painting has an order and there are different shapes and angles. Rectangular shape is main trend around this piece, including the wooden chest, the leg rest and the canvass. Also things overlap, creating the illusion of the shape look closer to viewer than the shape behind it. The example in this piece would be the chair on which Adelaide Labille Guiard sits be close to viewer than the girls behind it. This adds depth to the space. Also due to linear perspective girls behind the chair are smaller due to being farther away.
...hese repeated vertical lines contrast firmly with a horizontal line that divides the canvas almost exactly in half. The background, upper portion of the canvas, seems unchanging and flat, whereas the foreground and middle ground of the painting have a lot of depth to them.
A. Line – An irregular soft line is used to establish the eye level/horizon in background between the sky and the field. The diagonal lines define the field and are in an opposite direction of the diagonal lines that define the trunk off the tree in the middle of the picture. The diagonal lines in the field, the horizon line, and the edge of the painting create a linear perspective.
After the initial pre processing steps of smoothening and removal of noise, the edge strength is calculated by taking the gradient of the image. For the purpose of edge detection in an image, the Sobel operator first performs a 2-D spatial gradient measurement with the help of convolution masks. The convolution masks used is of the size 3X3, where one is used to calculate the horizontal gradient(Gx) while the other is used to calculate the vertical gradient(Gy). Then, the approximate absolute edge strength can be calculated at each point. The masks used for the convolution process is as shown
the propose of image block motion Extraction is to use 2D image of foreground and background which extract the predominant lines and vanishing point of the background base on geometry method and motion, the background depth map is considered. The depth of the object have used the motion extraction to obtain the motion depth map and then divided according to the color of the object to give the object region segmentation depth map.
At feature extraction part, authors proposed geometric and appearance method to extract the facial feature points out and some authors also stated that by using both combination approaches, it will increase the accuracy compared to the system which only used one approach. From here, it already gave the idea to the project system that it has no harm in applying two approaches together.
