Seeing fate is not on their side due to the ongoing feud between their parents, they are willing to do anything to be together, which unfortunately leads to both of their demise. Many people question if the love between Romeo and Juliet was true. The love between the two was not true because they fell in love with each other’s appearances, they didn’t know each other long enough to actually figure out each other, and they were hardly thinking straight during the relationship.

...and Juliet, when they marry, must marry secretly because of the feud. However, Maria and Tony do not marry, although they do perform a mock wedding. Another example of a difference is that Anita purposely tells the Jets that Maria is dead because of her hatred for them. But when Balthasar tells Romeo that Juliet is dead, he does it without knowing that it isn’t true. The last major difference between the two works is the death of the heroine. Juliet kills herself because she knows that her Romeo is dead and she cannot live without him. However, Maria is left alive at the end of West Side Story. It is almost as though she does not die so that she can accuse society of its prejudicial attitude against the Puerto Ricans and reveal everyone’s role in her and Tony’s love story.

Romeo and Juliet and West Side Story share many similar themes. Romeo and Juliet both chronicle a story of overcoming prejudice and hatred, forbidden love, and defying stereotypes that nobody thought could be broken. The two stories are similar in a multitude of ways, even though their settings are centuries apart- Romeo and Juliet set in the 1500’s, and West Side Story set in the 1950’s. The love that Maria and Tony have shows their willingness to sacrifice for each other no matter the circumstances. Romeo and Juliet is a sixteenth century play featuring two star-crossed lovers doomed for eternity. This is a brief summary of how Shakespeare portrayed his play before any real dialogue was composed. Not only is Romeo and Juliet the most well known play that Shakespeare wrote, but the first play he drafted displaying romantic love. In many people's opinions Romeo is one of the pivotal characters of the whole play. Comparisons can be made between Romeo and Tybalt as I personally believe they both hold a significance throughout the drama. William Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet is the classic story of two families, the Montague’s and Capulet’s who have an age old feud. Two children of the families, Juliet Capulet and Romeo Montague, meet and fall in love. The feud of their families encourages them to keep their relationship secret. They get married without telling anyone, but their family feud gets in the way. Juliet’s cousin, Tybalt, and Romeo’s friend, Mercutio, get into a sword fight and Mercutio is killed. Romeo kills Tybalt for revenge and is banished from Verona. Juliet and Friar Laurence come up with a plan to fake her death and get her out of Verona to be with Romeo, but Romeo does not receive the message of the plan and sneaks into Juliet’s tomb and kills himself. Upon waking, Juliet sees dead Romeo and kills herself also. This tragic ending is displayed in two very different ways by Baz Luhrmann (1996) and Franco Zeffirelli (1968). The death scene in Luhrmann’s version better portrays the intensity and emotion of the moment using script changes, setting, and music/sound.
Although the discrepancies between Romeo and Juliet and West Side Story are too frequent to categorize in such limited space, it is impossible for anyone familiar with both texts to not notice the obvious similarities between the two works ("Theme"). From the opening scenes in both, up through the rumble in West Side Story/death of Mercutio in Romeo and Juliet, the plays mirror each other (Poelstra). It isn't until the last part of West Side Story, where Tony (our modern-day Romeo) dies and Maria (Tony's Juliet) doesn't (unlike the two star-crossed lovers of Shakespeare's work, both of whom perish), that the major difference between the two works becomes apparent.
Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet is the most famous love story of all times, and each generation needs a version of their own, which they can feel identified with. The same play can be interpreted in a totally different way, according to the moral values, the relevant events and the point of view of the time in which it is performed. Thus, two films have been made, based on this masterpiece of English Literature. The first version was filmed in 1968, directed by Zeffirelli, while the second one, whose director is Baz Luhrmann, was made in the late nineties. Needless to say, there are many differences between the two of them, concerning mainly the ways in which certain topics are dealt with.
