The Colonies and Why They All Suck The geography and climate of the three colonial groups both vary but also overlap with similarities at the same time. While the Northern colonies were not very warm at all and had short growing seasons. The Middle and Southern colonies, however, were fairly warm and were moderately good with farming. They both had fertile soil, and long growing seasons. Also, while the Southern areas were much more flat, and covered with wetlands and farming areas, the Northern and Middle colonies were rockier than the Southern colonies.
