Differences and Similarities between ancient Greek and Roman Civilizations

The Greeks and the Romans, two completely different civilizations and yet so similar. They both had their different customs and traditions and may have been years apart, but they are the same, or as the same two different people can be. Both had the ability for greatness, and both were able to create a far reaching empire full of many different types of people. Entertainment wise the Greeks and the Romans were well occupied. Both the Greek and the Roman civilization were polytheistic. Greeks were a very religious people. In Greece each city-state had a patron god or goddess that protected their city. Greeks believed that their Gods appeared in human form but had superhuman strength and ageless beauty. Many of the Gods are depicted on various painted scenes on vases, and stone, terracotta and bronze sculptures by themselves or in mythological scenes interacting with humans and lesser Gods (Realign and Death). Rome’s Gods and Goddesses were from a blend of a variety of cultures including Greece. They too believed the gods were actively involved in their everyday life, so much so that they held sacred meals for their Gods during religious festivals in which the invitations were sent in the God’s name and a place was set for them at the table. The oldest male in the family preformed religious rituals for the whole household to the family God, while the state employed priests and Priestesses to worship at the temple. Though they could not predict the future the priests were the one who could read signs to see if the Gods were happy or angry with the people. In the Greece city-state of Athens women were very restricted. A women had very little property right even less than in other city-states. However women were able to make dedications and loans some in fairly large sums too. Also priesthood was a public activity open to all women (ancient Greece Civilization). In Rome women were in charge of the household and called masterfamilias. They were expected to behave modestly, gracefully and with dignity. Women were married in their early teen years. The Roman state gave rewards to women who had successfully given birth. After having three children a women was considered legally independent. In the case of a divorce the women got their dowry back in full and returned to her father’s household unless she was independent before marriage.
