THE FIRST GREAT AWAKENING
The First Great Awakening was an extremely important religious revival that moved through the American colonies. This spiritual revival took place in the American colonies around 1730 to 1760. The First Great Awakening was able to gain a lot of momentum because of the influential preaching that taught the citizens of these colonies that the only way to salvation was by accepting Jesus Christ as their Savior.
The Second Great Awakening was a religious revival. It influenced the entire country to do good things in society and do what was morally correct. The Second Great Awakening influenced the North more than it did the South and on a whole encouraged democratic ideas and a better standard for the common man and woman. The Second Great Awakening made people want to repent the sins they had made and find who they were. It influenced the end of slavery, abolitionism, and the ban of alcohol, temperance.
Would you escape the burdens of everyday life, if only for an hour? The Great Awakening made this possible in the 18th century for many men, women, and children. Trends by definition are “to have a general tendency, as events, conditions, etc.” (Dictionary, p.1) “The Great Awakening set many social and economic trends for the 18th century as well as the world today.
In the early 1700's spiritual revivalism spread rapidly through the colonies. This led to colonists changing their beliefs on religion. The great awakening was the level to which the revivalism spread through the colonists. Even with this, there was still religious revivalism in the colonies. One major reason for the Great Awakening was that it was not too long before the revolution. The great awakening is reason to believe that William G Mcloughlin's opinion and this shows that there was a cause to the American Revolution.
Historically, the Enlightenment helped create an increase in concerns with political values, the government and education within the colonies. It brought ideals that helped improve the government and documents like The Constitution and The Declaration of The Rights of Man. In the end it helped create more of a division between The colonies of America and Britain and the change of Europe without the religious aspects. Introduction
Throughout history there have been countless significant events that have provoked immense change in the world. These events, dating back to as early as 8000 B.C., have caused massive effects and became turning points in the world we live in today. All through history many occurences share underlying themes, some of which will be expressed in this essay. Equality is amongst the many themes that are shared and repeated throughout history.
The events, people, and works of the early to mid 19th century support the theme of change in America by poetry, the Second Great Awakening, and John James Audubon. A work of the the 19th century is poetry, because it was an era of defining American voice (BOK pg 41). Additionally, poetry influenced American culture by changing intellectual and literary independence (BOK pg 41). This provides insight on how poetry changed American culture, and why it is the sine qua non of culture. The Second Great Awakening was a religious movement, which inspired other reforms in society (BOK pg 40). Unlike the First Great Awakening, the religion swung away from the intellect and toward a religion of heart, but the Second Great Awakening gave a sense of improvement
In comparison to other works such as Mark Twain’s The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn wherein the title succinctly tells what the story shall contain, Kate Chopin’s The Awakening represents a work whose title can only be fully understood after the incorporation of the themes and content into the reader’s mind, which can only be incorporated by reading the novel itself. The title, The Awakening, paints a vague mental picture for the reader at first and does not fully portray what content the novel will possess. After thorough reading of the novel, one can understand that the title represents the main character, Edna Pontellier’s, sexual awakening and metaphorical resurrection that takes place in the plot as opposed to not having a clue on what the plot will be about.
The Enlightenment was from 1685 to 1815 in Europe. This was an era of new ideas questioning religion and traditional authority. Also, this era adapted on the suggestion that humanity could improve by rational and logical change. During the Enlightenment, there were many philosophers who started to think differently than philosophers before them. These thinkers focused their attention on government and religion.
The Renaissance happen from 1300-1700 and extends briefly through the 18th century. The Enlightenment happen throughout the 18th century and spread throughout the 19th century. The Renaissance and the Enlightenment were alike because they were both periods where people tried to move away from religion.
