Ethics refers to the moral principles that affect ways of decision making by people and their lifestyles. Moral principles refer to the individuals and societal goods. Ethics enables people to deal with dilemmas including a realization of their rights and responsibilities, differentiation between right and wrong, understanding how to lead a good life and making moral decisions. Ethics is also concerned with examination and critique of moral beliefs and practices. Examination and critiquing of moral beliefs and practices involves investigation on specific norms, behaviors and behaviors, then judging them to determine if they are mutually contradictory. There are two main types of ethical principles that will be discussed in this paper, and how they are applied to the decision making process. They are Deontological and Utilitarian. Ethics are moral principles that can be used to help guide peoples decisions. We are all different and therefore our beliefs and opinions differ. There are many ethical theories, and according to Panza and Potthast (n.d.) the following are some that are widely used. Virtue ethics is one theory which states that personality is the most important thing. Living an ethical life, acting right, requires that one develops and demonstrates the quality of courage, compassion, wisdom, and temperance. It also requires that greed, jealousy, and selfishness is avoided. Utilitarianism states that the amount of happiness and suffering created by a person’s actions is what matters the most. As a result, acting rightly includes maximizing the amount of happiness and minimizing the amount of suffering around you. At times you may need to break some of the traditional moral rules to achieve such an outcome. Kantianism is another theory which highlights the principles behind actions rather than an actions results. It states that it requires to be motivated by good principles that treats everyone with respect. If you’re motivated by good principles, you overcome your animal instinct and act ethically. Another ethical theory is the Contract theory, which suggest that ethics should be thought of as terms of agreements between people. It suggests that doing the right thing means obeying agreements set by members rather than those of society. For this theory ethics isn’t necessarily about character, consequences, or principles. Organizational ethics is an area that is described to be in its infancy therefore it is always developing, as seen all over the world; ethical codes exist within large corporations and are on the rise. This relatively new area of focus is often described as a necessary evil and tricky aspect to start but once completed is very beneficial. Progressively during the last two decades, public and corporate organizations have wanted to diminish deviations from ethical standards by introducing ethics programs. Ethics are the moral values that dictate a person's behaviour; they help determine what is good or bad, and right or wrong, but there are varying degrees between the two extremes. They are not determined by the law but many organizations feel they are required for the organization to be successful because the efficiency level and overall power of the work environment is greatly affected by the socio-economic environment at workplace. Over the past twenty years many organizations have tried to reduce the variances in ethical standards by starting ethic programs. Ethics is important to an organization's effectiveness because it can help prevent an organization from making wrong or unethical decisions that could potentially ruin the organization. Ethical standards that evolved over the history of Western civilization deal with interpersonal relationships. What is right or wrong? What one should do and not do when dealing with other people. When businesses were small and the property of a few individuals, traditional ethical standards were applied to meet different situations. Ethics in business is a highly important concept, as it can affect a company’s profits, salaries paid to employees and CEOs, and public opinion, among many other aspects of a business.
