We have always been told from a young age that there is a big difference between men and women. First of all, they look different from their body structure, their views are different, and what’s expected from them is different. But since then, the world has changed so much, to a point where women are able to do things that men can do and vice verse. There are still things that both aren 't able to do just because of nature. As connecting to jazz music, it is considered american classical music, which can be used to describe as strengths of American diversity. Women that have been associated with jazz music have held much respect. There are certain things women are better at doing compared to men, but when you look at the opportunities both …show more content…
As shared in the article, “Feminist Aesthetics in Jazz: An Interview with Susanne Vincenza of Alive”, by Mary S. Pollock, states that “ women musicians have been silenced by rigid stereotypes and economic sanctions as systematically as women writers, women politicians, and all other women professional”. They have faced many obstacles while trying to accomplish something they should not be judged for just because they are women. Gender difference impacted the society to develop this idea there are certain things proved and other aren 't for women. Even though, women made a major important contribution to the mainstream of jazz through history more than men have. Jazz had been one of those which has revolutionary feminist conciseness because of how it started and changed things for women. Since that had started to turn out good, women were still not playing any instruments during performances because it was a manly thing. It was not considered feminine for women to play, as an example, drums. Just to include, it was considerably okay for women to sing, even some what acceptable for women to play the piano as well. Jazz was a unique form of music, there had never been anything like it before. It was rebellious, rhythmic, and it broke the rules- musical and social. It started a musical revolution, “With its offbeat rhythms and strange melodies, jazz was blamed for everything from drunkenness and deafness to in increase in unwed mothers.” Jazz was seen as immoral and worried the older generation that their kids would lose interest in classical music. It was also seen as against society because it came about from the African- American culture, but despite all of that, jazz led to a new era of music that still prevails today.
Jazz was positive music, with uplifting sounds and relatable lyrics. People who listened to it could relate to the words being sung and felt happier afterwards. The other side of the debate, though, felt as though the music was bringing on a new era, one that they were not comfortable with. Understandably so, because change is never easy. This group of people were "fearful of such rapid change and nostalgic for the small-town America" that they had once known. They had become used to quiet, conservative times, which were now changing due to the "noise" we call jazz. There is reason enough to not want to change, but to have such a negative outlook on a new life is never the answer. Change is inevitable, therefore it should've been expected. With a new generation will always come a new something, new music, new trends, new anything. For the people who enjoyed jazz, this change brought an abundance of positivity. They could happily listen to the music that would define generation.
Out of the streets of New Orleans, a new form of music arose. This new type of music was not known as African or European, but simply American. It was jazz. In 1900 jazz first developed, but it wasn’t until the 1920’s when jazz began to spread across the Nation and eventually across the World. (Hakim, 57) The word jazz itself did not originate in New Orleans along with the music. The term first showed up in sports columns in San Francisco. Most people from New Orleans never even heard the word until they left their homes. Eventually, like the music, the word jazz and this new phenomenon had stretched out across the nation. Jazz was and is known to be the most predominant form of music of the 1920’s. The television had not yet been invented, but rhythm and drum beat of Africa, but also contained the instruments and heritage of Europe. People everywhere had their radios to listen and dance to the music. Some listened to the newly found jazz music everyday. (Schoenberg, 10) Some people went to jazz clubs. At the jazz clubs the musicians were primarily black and the audience was mostly white. There were many clubs that were located in Harlem, which was on the north end of Manhattan. Almost all of...
Jazz culture to be exact, is the topic at hand. Jazz culture expands throughout many genres and is expressed in many ways. The many genres of jazz are Big Band, jazz funk, modern jazz, smooth jazz, Latin jazz, and jazz fusion. Each of these comes with its own unique sound and origin. Latin jazz, for example, employs rhythms from both African and Hispanic backgrounds. The sound is particularly up tempo with divided eight beat patterns. Jazz artists who have portrayed these qualities of jazz to the world are at the very core of its culture. Many people who are in places of power in this society or are held in some form of esteem have had some exposure to the arts, whether it is classical or jazz. The band eventually grew to become a twenty-piece band and by 1901 they were so successful they had a sponsor and business manager. The band travelled all over to perform and even performed at a serval World’s Fairs. Helen Butler and the Ladies Military Band became notionally recognized, which was very rare because they were one of the few all-female bands. The performers of the jazz age influenced the culture of the United States with the scandalous ballads they sang. The country’s style changed with women wearing their hair and dress seems shorter and men wearing their pants more relaxed. The new fad of music also effected the ballroom setting. Partners moved closer to each other and moved their hips more than ever before. Conservative citizens were appalled by the new styles of music. Jazz was created by the differing views of African American musicians in New Orleans. For the first time African Americans were able to gain the respect of their
Jazz is a treasure to American culture, which originally came from New Orleans of South part of America in 19th century. It’s a special music because it contains changeable rhythm and improvisational performance. But what makes jazz so special in 1920s is that Jazz could not only be performed by an individual but also could be performed by a group of people. In order to change the world for the long term the youth must be targeted and the old perceptions and thoughts of older more conservative and racist generations must be proven to be inadequate. When the white kids in both the south and the north began enjoying Jazz it gave a lot of spotlight to some of the best Jazz composers which a majority of which were African American. The youths respected the music which helped young whites across the nation develop the respect for black men and their work. As more and more whites indulged in the Jazz music they got a taste of black culture while being shown that humans intelligence, strength, and work ethic does not depend on the color of ones skin.

One of America’s musical styles has become one of the major music genres worldwide and it is jazz music. The genre was developed around the late 1800s to the early 1900s, and originated from African Americans in New Orleans and Louisiana (Issitt 1). Within Jazz there are many different categories such as Dixieland, swing, cool jazz, hard bop, jazz-rock, fusion, and many more (Philipp 3). In addition, “Jazz as a whole is frequently regarded as one of the United States’ greatest cultural achievements” (Issitt 2).
