The Enlightenment- Also known as “the age of reason,” The Enlightenment period was a movement that questioned traditional authority, and embraced the idea that humanity could be improved through rational change.

Great Awakening- A religious movement that swept religious groups across America and Britain. Pulling away from ritual, ceremony, sacramentalism and hierarchy, the Great Awakening emphasized salvation through Jesus Christ. Christianity became much more personal, and as such, attracted more people.
