Animation, like any other creative art, requires a successful animator to be: patient, talented, disciplined, and willing to work hard. Among the term animation are subcategories such as: character and effects. Character animation is the hardest, in that is requires the most skill. The animator must have a critical eye for every detail that goes into the final project. Character animation can also be broken up into its own subcategories such as: 2D, 3D, traditional, stop motion, and motion graphics. However, 2D and 3D are the most commonly pursued. Regardless if the project is generated by hand or by computer, the overall goal of the animator is to entertain. In the beginning of animation, animators created images using pen and paper. They were then arranged to give the illusion of movement and depth. This type of animation is called traditional or 2D animation. This style is a great option if the animator is working with characters and want the benefits of a hand drawn quality. However, with 2D animation the animator would need to start completely from a scratch piece of paper to change the camera angle for a scene. Also, truth is fewer and fewer animators can create drawings needed to make a beautiful 2D animation. Today, animators have turned more to 3D animation. 3D animations are created on a computer, with modeling programs to produce a much more realistic and complex animation experience. What helps in making a lifelike animation, is the simple fact that it can be viewed and lit from all angles. 3D animation also adds textures that can be placed into live scenes and elements. This style can work for any concept and offers flexible, customizable, and an overall fluid motion. A friend (a non-animator) of J.K. Riki was asked why he thought 3D compared to 2D was “more real”. He replied and said, “blurs the line between fantasy and reality” and “a child’s daydream – and all other ages – is theoretically 3D, so it’s like their fantasies come to life”. However, what an animator must know is to achieve beautiful movement within the animation, animators must apply the same principles that apply to 2D. The standard Disney story from the mid 1930s to the beginning of the 1940s is one of the pursuit and somewhat linear progression towards realism. Many theorists used the term ‘hyperrealism’ to describe what appeared to be Disney’s “attempt to represent reality in a medium predicated on artificiality” during the Disney-Formalist period (Disney Formalism, Pallant, 40). With animation came imagination, especially during the silent era films. In silent movies since there was no sound involved imagination was one of the main keys of enhancing your watching experience. This is the reason why cartoons have always been steered towards children, due to them having imagination in their younger ages. Animation has a variety of differences between Japanese culture and the culture of the United States. While animation is usually made for the sole purpose of entertainment for children in the United States, Japanese animation, also known as anime as it is referred to both in Japan and in the West, is a form of media that is enjoyed by people of all ages. Unlike the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and SpongeBob Square pants, both very popular American animations shows in their times, anime focuses more on drama and other non childlike qualities. The differing cultures of the United States and Japan can be considered the main factor to the huge differences in their own respected animation styles.
When observing the Renaissance works, their main figures were always drawn with their heads looking up, as the authors wanted to achieve an innocent and the pure look of their characters, albeit it does not seem to be based on truth and reality. When an animator wanted to present a cute vulnerable character, he would use this technique, some would use it on purpose, but for Fred Moore it was an instinctive way of drawing and due to that reason he was the one who really created the Disney style. Furthermore, considering any existent art , it can be noticed that every author has his special mark, his own attitude, that he conveys throughout his work, therefore the same thing happens with animation or paintings, except the fact that in animation in a single drawing could not be shown anything but the author's own attitude. One of the films most important and groundbreaking technology is the use of motion capture. Motion capture technology has the ability to capture more realistic eye movements. Special reflective markers are placed onto the actors, which are wearing tight suits. Cameras recognize these markers and therefore the movements of the actor can be recorded. The captured data that was recorded is transformed into a digital model and transferred to a 3D software which would show the characters moving exactly how the actors did when they were performing for the scene. In addition, producers of instructional films may use animation to help explain a difficult idea or one that could not be shown in live action. Animation can also be combined with live action in a movie. Many animators continue to make many drawings by hand. Since the mid-1980's, however, computer assistance combined with hand-drawn animation has become standard in many movie studios. When walking through an art museum, there are rarely paintings of caricatures on display. Though some artists have developed avant guarde or impressionist styles, these are not considered cartoons for the simple fact that they never were displayed on the silver screen. Yet paintings of Disney characters sell for thousands at auction if they are authentic. Disney separates itself from other animation studios with their signature style and tedious techniques, like traditional artists. Since Disney has been making animated films for years, it has become a huge part of American culture. Many people even classify the older, hand-drawn films to be moving works of art. On the other hand, animated TV shows from Japan known as Anime, are not considered to be works of art. Often starting as a comic like sterilization known as manga, anime has captured the hearts of millions of viewers. Like any art form, there are a variety of styles to choose from; ranging from breathtaking to humorous. Like the renaissance painters or even Disney, Anime itself has shared many of the same traits. However, the world over dismisses it as a childish pastime, rather than the art form that it is. Both Anime and Art are a culmination of style, cultural representation, and emotional expression.
The basic definition of an animation is to make a succession of multiple images and clash them together. Animation as a whole has come a long way, and may still go a long way from where it at. Due to the creativeness and fast pace of 3D animation, 2D animation is slowly losing its hold on today’s society. With 2D and 3D animation one has to take in account what either involves and how they are done. When making 2D animations they consist of the length and width. In 3D, the dimensions consist of length, width, & depth. 2D animations have an X and Y axis, the X axis. 3D animations have an X, Y, and Z axis. X is horizontal, Y is vertical, the Z being for depth. In 2d animation everything is flat, whereas in 3D everything is made to seen as if it is jumping out of the TV, movie screen, paper, etc.”
