De Vre Professor Engh Basic College English III 16 May 2014 Golding’s Adventures in Dictatorship and Democracy William Golding is an author who won a Nobel Prize in Literature, and is best known for his novel Lord of the Flies. He was also awarded the Booker Prize for literature in 1980 for his novel Rites of Passage, the first book in what became his sea trilogy, To the Ends of the Earth. William Golding was born September 19, 1911, and died June 19, 1993. He won the Nobel in 1983. Lord of the Flies is about being in the midst of a wartime evacuation, when a plane crashes on an isolated island in the Pacific Ocean. Young boys, Jack and Ralph, discover their differences in leadership. Ralph being demanding, charismatic, and fair has a hard time letting Jack who is intimidating, self centered, and violent take full control of the boys. On one side, Jack organizes a group into a hunting group for food, while Ralph is left with a few boys including Piggy.
