Nurse Anesthetist and their journey to where they are now
Nurses have played an important role in medicine throughout the years. When people hear the word “nurse” they often think of the ones in the hospital given care and educating. Many people don’t think about the other branches of nursing like the nurse Anesthetist. A nurse Anesthetist has contributed a great deal in administering anesthetics for about 150 years. Nurse anesthetist have struggled with autonomy and being able to practice without being supervised by an Anesthesiologist. They also were limited to work in specific areas but now they work in many hospital and outpatient settings. Nurse anesthetists have come a long way and are conducting research and are helping improve the world of anesthesia care. As a whole the nurse anesthetist career has grown from the 80’s to the present from and it’s just going to continue to grow and improve.
Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist (CRNA) started working in hospital doing what no one else wanted to do. Hagelhout & Plaus (2013) write about who would administer anesthesia in the 1800’s. The work of anesthesia was delegated to students, nurses, newly graduated physicians, specialist in other fields and even custodian were called upon to be etherizers (Nagelhout &Plaus 2013). One reason nurse anesthetist profession was created was to have a consistency of who administered anesthesia because back then intern would to it. The interns couldn’t be trusted because they would focus on the surgeries instead of the patient. The nurses had the drive and dedication to administer anesthesia without being distracted.

... been conducted. CRNAs haven’t just focused their research on Anesthesia instead they focus on a wide variety from education to economics. That’s shows that CRNAs don’t just want to contribute to the improving Anesthesia care but also everything in-between which shows they care for the patient as a whole.

The nature of the work is very similar for the C.N.A. and L.P.N. A C.N.A. work includes performing routine tasks under the supervision of nursing staff. They answer call bells, deliver messages, serve meals, make beds, and help patients eat, dress, and bathe. Aides also provide skin care to patients, take pulse, temperature, respiration, and blood pressure and help patients get in and out of bed and walk. They also escort patients to operating rooms, exam rooms, keep patient rooms neat, set up equipment, or store and move supplies. Aides observe patient’s physical, mental, and emotional condition and report any change to the R.N. Likewise the L.P.N. provides basic bedside care. They take vital signs such as temperature, blood pressure, restorations, and pulse. They also treat bedsores, prepare and give injections and enemas, apply dressings, apply ice packs and insert catheters. L.P.N.’s observe patients and report adverse reactions to medications or treatments to the R.N. or the doctor. They help patients with bathing, dressing, and personal hygiene, and care for their emotional needs.

Nurse Practitioning is a very important job in the field of medicine. In the nursing field the highest degree attainable while holding the status of “Nurse” is Nurse Practitioner (NP). This career has influenced the nursing world in several ways throughout the years. A few key things that set Nurse Practitioning apart from other medical professionals are the history and background of the job, the quality care provided by the nurse practitioner, and the different responsibilities help by an NP as opposed to those of an RN. These are important because nurse practitioners can be compared to other physicians, the history changed how people looked at and thought of nurses, and NPs can perform different and possibly more advanced activities than other level nurses. The history of nurse practitioning is more detailed and complex than one would think. Throughout the history of the profession, small detail have been refined such as the education, training, and responsibilities required to be effective in the career and the job prospect that come from being trained and certified. There are several things that go into the finely tuned care provided by nurse
I consider anesthesiology as a unique area in healthcare requiring specialized skills and knowledge. An anesthesiologist assistant career involves working as a trained non-physician anesthesia provider in cooperation with and under the supervision of an anesthesiologist. Activities include health history taking, carrying out care plans for anesthesia, preoperative physical examination, administering medication, supervising recovery and other responsibilities as assigned by the anesthesiologist. An admission into the anesthesiology assistant program would provide me with the advanced education and prerequisite clinical training that would enable me participate in these patient care roles. I am aware that the training programs for anesthesiology assistants are comparatively few as compared to many other healthcare career options. An admission into an anesthesiology assistant program would represent for me an invaluable opportunity to enter into a unique and challenging area in healthcare, and one in which I am very eager to participate
The Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist (CRNA), also called nurse anesthetists, is a registered nurse that has specialized in delivering anesthesia during surgery and other procedures, as well as monitoring vital signs and maintaining the patient’s airway. A CRNA can also further their specialty specifically for pediatric, bariatric, cardiac care, etc. patients. To become a CRNA, an extensive education, as well as experience, is required before even being considered to enter the anesthesia educational program. CRNAs have a variety of work settings to choose from, such as dentist offices, operating rooms, and endoscope procedure units. The salary range for a CRNA varies due to experience and subspecialty, but the profession is one of the top paid nursing practices. Education, work setting and conditions, salary, and job prospects all vary on location but certification and recertification remain the same nationally.
As a medical / surgical RN, I provided care for the elderly, the infirm, the mentally challenged, the young, and the psychologically disturbed. The wide variety of patients exposed me to the effects of life style choices, health care choices, and the resulting impacts to the patient as well as to the family of the patient. This experience has fully matured my view of the awesome responsibility that we, as health care professionals, have been charged with, and it has furthered my desire to obtain the skills necessary to provide more advanced care for my patients. In addition to exposure, maturity and experience, my career as a medical / surgical RN has also sharpened my critical thinking abilities and provided insight on observing signs and symptoms that a patient may be unware of. Furthermore, as a charge nurse I learned the importance of collaborating with other health care professionals in order to provide the highest level of care available. In summary, my career as an RN has provided valuable experience, maturity, exposure to impact and outcome, enhanced my critical thinking abilities, and improved my collaboration
Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetists (CRNA) are high trained nurses who use their developed training in the use of anesthesia to alleviate patient pain and discomfort due to medical procedures. Nurse anesthetists have been providing anesthesia for more than 125 years, dating back to the early Civil War. ("Nurse anesthetist," 2014). They undergo rigorous training post nursing licensure that allows them to hold a high position in the nursing field working beside surgeons, anesthesiologist, dentists, podiatrist, and many other skilled healthcare professionals ("Nurse anesthetist," 2014). Pain management is one of the main aspects in any procedure, if not the most important to the patient, therefore giving nurse anesthetists a wide spectrum of work settings in the medical field that they can practice in.
In this career about there are approximately an average of 2600000 people employed. There is many duties in this field but the main achievement in this field is to maintain a stable and healthy life towards a patient. This is not always going to be a success one day you might have to deal with an unexpected health issue that can no longer be cured. You may pass by this situation quite frequently that doesn’t mean you’re a bad nurse.
According to Hamric, Spross and Hanson (2005), “advanced practice nursing is the application of the expanded range of practical, theoretical and research based- competencies” to provide patient care in different settings (Pulcini, 2013). Advanced practice registered nurse APRN is a nurse that completed a graduate level program that can practice as a certified nurse practitioner, (NP) certified registered nurse anesthetist (CRNA), clinical nurse midwife (CNM) or clinical nurse specialist (CNS) (Scope and standard, 2010). To be licensed to practice as APRN, they need to pass a national certification exam and maintained their license via recertification through continuous competencies.
Nursing is one of the oldest professions and was originally centered at the patient’s home. The first hospital was built in 1751 in Philadelphia, but it was, at that time, not well thought of as a place to provide safe health care. Hospitals were known as asylums or poorhouses until the Civil War. The Civil War created the need for new hospitals to be built, thus moving the nursing profession from the home to the hospital. This is when nursing became a recognized profession and when people began to respect the work that nurses would do. Over the years, registered nurses have become even more valued in the health care setting (Weatherford).
Anesthesia is used in almost every single surgery. It is a numbing medicine that numbs the nerves and makes the body go unconscious. You can’t feel anything or move while under the sedative and are often delusional after being taken off of the anesthetic. Believe it or not, about roughly two hundred years ago doctors didn’t use anesthesia during surgery. It was rarely ever practiced. Patients could feel everything and were physically held down while being operated on. 2It wasn’t until 1846 that a dentist first used an anesthetic on a patient going into surgery and the practice spread and became popular (Anesthesia). To this day, advancements are still being made in anesthesiology. 7The more scientists learn about molecules and anesthetic side effects, the better ability to design agents that are more targeted, more effective and safer, with fewer side effects for the patients (Anesthesia). Technological advancements will make it easier to read vital life signs in a person and help better decide the specific dosages a person needs.
Given these points its is easily shown that an anesthesiologist is not only highly educated in medicine and the human body but as well as in the ability to interact with others and deal with with his or her patients emotions and reactions. Anesthesiologists hold a very important position in the medical field. The general public needs anesthesiologist not only during surgeries but in dentistry, birth, and plastic abscission. With modern medicine advancing everyday, who knows in what other fields society we will need them.
Nursing is one of the oldest professions. It isn’t a static occupation, as it has changed frequently over time. Its development and evolution has changed differently depending on the historical influences. As of today the nursing profession is changing and becoming larger and greater. Nursing has gone from being a career that did not require an education, to being one that is very respected and demands a high education.
...the patient’s safety, gathering supplies needed and checking if equipment needed are working, setting up the sterile field, maintaining its sterility, and completing all the documents. Hamlin (2010) further states that RNs may be required to provide emotional support during the induction phase of anaesthesia.
