Adolescence is a developmental stage that covers the years between puberty and the transition to adulthood. This is a time when teenagers change their thought process, their feelings and the process of interaction with others. In addition, there will be significant changes in growth of the bodies of teenagers during this time. Physically girls will have matured during the time with the boys still being on the process of maturity.
Normally, there are concerns with both sexes on the size of the body, shape and weight as time moves along. A unique personality usually develops during this time with lots of opinions shaping. The importance of relationships and independence also takes root. This means that the teenager will find the need for having friends being important while developing a sense of who they are in addition to preparing for responsibility in their lives. All these are developmental milestones that guide the transition to adulthood lying behind adolescence.
As noted, there are a lot of physical changes that occur during this period of development. Bearing in mind that it is a stage of puberty when sexual maturation occurs, the reproductive organs and external genitilia for both sexes develops rapidly. In addition, traits such as facial hair and voice change in boys develop, with girls experiencing development of

This means that matters are still looked at in terms of either being wrong or right, good or bad and related line of thought. Matters are rarely looked at in a long-term range or beyond the present time. However, the adolescent stage changes all this. As time goes by, the teenagers come to develop their ability to look into the future. The ability to solve problems is also developed considerably. At the end of the day, the ability to reason gives the teenagers some aspect of social awareness that puts them on a different level than when they come in to the
We are introduced to adolescence in the 5th stage of development. Adolescence begins for boys around the age of 14 and continues up until the age of 21 years of age. At this stage of development, there are many changes that occur emotionally, physically, sexually and spiritually (McGoldrick, Carter, & Garcia Preto, 2011). At this time, adolescent kids are going through changes in their body. They are dealing with coming into their own sexuality. Skills pertaining to social skills and social relationships are being developed through experience. Adolescents are also increasing their skills of physical and mental coordination, such as learning about the world and working on their own coordination. Adolescence is also characterized by learning their own identity and where they fit in the world, as well as learning their relationship with peers and those around them. Spiritual identity is also developed along with a deeper understanding of life. Independence is something that is also weighing on the mind of an adolescent. Overall changes in the family structure can also occur when a child of this age reaches this
This cognitive change allows adolescents to; think about what is possible, think about the abstract, think about the thinking process, think about things in a multidimensional fashion, and see things as relative. One manifestation of the adolescent’s increased facility with thinking about possibilities is the development of deductive reasoning (Steinberg, 2014). Deductive reasoning leads adolescents to hypothetically thinking, which enables adolescents to plan ahead and look at their future. Abstract thinking increases adolescents’ interest in thinking about interpersonal relationships, politics, philosophy, religion, and mortality (Steinberg, 2014). This type of thinking makes it possible for adolescents to have friendships, look at the fairness of things, and to be honest. Metacognition, or thinking about thinking, enables adolescents to make conscious decisions and sometimes it leads to adolescent egocentrism. Adolescent egocentrism is extreme periods of self-absorption and personal fable, which is the belief that everything is centered on you. The development of multidimensional thinking allows adolescents to look at things in a variety of ways. Unfortunately this type of thinking tends to complicate situations for adolescents. Finally seeing things in more relative terms “adolescents are more likely to
The teenage year is the time when the body starts producing sex hormones and goes through a major growth spurt. This is the period when
One stage of adolescent development that my teen went through was puberty. Puberty is different for girls and boys and is manifested differently as they go through many physical and cognitive changes. As I was raising my teen daughter I noticed that the changes in her body during puberty played a role in the way she viewed herself. By age 11 she became more interested in her appearance as a result of some compliments from some boys in her school. She started to wear makeup to school every day and became more interested in buying new clothes and shoes. As pu...
Adolescence is a transition which has no fixed time limits. However, the changes that occur at this time are so significant that it is useful to talk about adolescence as a distinct period of human life cycle. This period ranges from biological changes to changes in behavior and social status, thus making it difficult to specify its limits exactly (Damon, 2008). Adolescence begins with puberty, i.e. a series of physiological changes that lead to full development of the sexual organs and the ability to breed and sex. The time interval that elapses begins at 11 to 12 years and extends to 18 to 20. However we cannot associate to a 13 with one 18 years. Let us talk about early adolescence between 11 to 14 years, which coincides with puberty, and after a second period of youth, or late adolescence between 15-20 years. Its extension to adulthood depends on social, cultural, environmental as well as personal adaptation.
Adolescence. The. The instinctive phenomenon that delivers many suspicions and guilty pleasures that haunt the young minds of adolescents until the coming of age. However, the absence of adolescence delivers the vacancy of knowledgeable wings that fly up to moral intelligence. It epitomizes the meager amount of light that provides sight to the step directly in front of one’s self, rather than light radiating upon the rest of the staircase; the unknown world of adulthood.
During middle childhood, children are experiencing physical changes as they go from early childhood to middle childhood. Zembar and Blume (2009) write that, “School-age children undergo rapid spurts in height and weight as well as improvement in athletic abilities. They begin the onset of puberty at varied ages, with 11 years the average age for girls and 13 years for boys, marked first by hormonal changes, followed by observable changes in physical appearance and behavior”(Zembar & Blume,2009). Also during this time, children experience puberty which may be a new experience for them. Parents can encourage a positive transition through puberty by helping their child feel comfortable about the changes by talking with them about puberty and helping them adjust.
Adolescence is the transitional stage from childhood to adulthood, commonly occurs amongst individuals aged between 12 to 18 years (Hoffnung et al., 2016, p. 350). It is a developmental period characterised by hormonal changes that result from the onset of puberty, which is defined by the emergence of secondary sexual characteristics, such as growth of body hair and deepening voices in males, and breast development and menstruation in females (Jones & Creedy, 2012, p. 28). The timing in the onset of puberty differs in gender, girls generally reach pubertal development at an earlier age than boys (on average 13 years old for girls, and 14 years old for boys). In addition, environmental variables also influence the timing of puberty. For example,
Adolescence is a period of transition between the ages of 13 – 19, after childhood but before adulthood. Adolescence can be a difficult period in a teenager's life. Many teenagers do not know how to react or how to adapt to all of the physical, social, and psychological changes that occur during this period. Some adolescents pass through this period without problem, while for others, it is a period of torture, discomfort, and anxiety. With all the biological and social pressures that occur during adolescence, many teens fail to assume their identity. Sometimes family and society does not help to make this task easier. Challenges teenagers face due to biology and society are body image, hormonal changes, social and parental pressures, family problems, school pressures, alcohol, drug abuse, homosexuality, and suicide.
Throughout our life, it can be marked by developmental changes in every domain of life: our physical, cognitive, social, personalities, and morals. Due to some important researchers such as Erickson, Freud, Piaget we are able to understand the development of each of these domains. Each stage of it’s life has it’s own difficulties and events that can determine a person’s life (Mogler, 2008). During the stages of adolescence, they are very vulnerable to a lot going on in their life such as fitting in, peers, family, school, activities, and society, and not to forget the ups and downs of puberty. Adolescence can be viewed as a huge part of many children’s lives where in this part of their life they try to find teenagers experience physical, cognitive,
To be a teenager is to be in a time of fluctuation and more often than not in western society, a time of rebellion. There are certain rituals that take place during the teens such as socializing with friends in a place other than school, more responsibilities around the house and less juvenile relationships with members of the opposite sex. Biologically teenagers change dramatically, with girls usually starting their periods and maturing into a phase where their bodies get ready to have children whereas boys develop facial hair, their voices deepen and other matters. They also become more aware of themselves sexually and it is this period in which most people are experimental with their sexuality as well as drugs and their own personal style.
Developmental effects are what make a teen a teen. At the beginning of adolescence, a teenager undergoes many changes in their life physically. In fact, sources have said that teens change faster than any other age range (Lindsay 22). They will “shoot up in their height” (Fenwick 15). A girl will start growing around the age of nine and ten and reach full maturity about age 16, while guys start at roughly twelve and reach full maturity around age eighteen. Teen weight fluctuates often as well. It might even double between the ages of ten and eighteen (Fenwick 16). For guys, this weight is mainly muscle but for girls, the weight is both muscle and fat (Fenwick 17). These changes do not always happen at the same time for everybody. The earlier developers are normally smarter than the standard and delayed developers. Also, they are taller than their friends, which for guys will make them popular but it will make girls feel like they don’t belong, and develop bad posture as a resul...
During this stage, a child is expected to learn identity versus identity confusion, producing fidelity, or "faith in one 's ideology" (Feist, Feist, Roberts 233). He or she will also begin to physically mature. This is better known as puberty. This stage was an influential time in my life. I moved to Florida, my parents got a divorce, and I endured an extremely abusive relationship. All of these things led me to feel inadequate. It wasn 't until I attended Cosmetology a few years after high school that I learned that I am, indeed, adequate and have many abilities that can be an asset. I also began to learn how to have a stronger social skills and develop relationships with strangers who would later become great friends. It took me years to learn to be confident in who I am, but none-the-less, I did succeed through this
Every boy is different, but here are some of the most common changes to look out for. Some of the changes your might experience are that you will grow taller and become more muscular (this includes your shoulders broadening), your larynx (adam’s apple) gets bigger and your voice begins to deepen, your testicles begin to produce sperm, your body will start to produce more hormones (so you might get erections when you least expect them), ejaculations can happen while you are asleep, (these are called ‘nocturnal emissions’, or ‘wet dreams’) but don’t worry wet dreams are totally normal. You may find you sweat more causing oily skin and hair, and acne may develop on your face and body, pubic hair will start to grow under your arms and around your penis and testicles, you may also find more hair growing on your legs and arms, hair will also appear on your chin and upper lip, you may have mood swings and feel emotional, but your feelings will settle down in
Adolescence is a time of challenge and change for both teens and parents. Teens are at a stage in life where they face a multitude of pressing decisions -- including those about friends, careers, sex, smoking, drinking, drugs and parental values. At the same time, they are confronted with profound physical, social and emotional changes.
