As one of societies most powerful human tools, culture is a complex structure of shared goals and attitudes within a group of individuals. From the development of literacy in a Hispanic culture in the 1960s to a modernized American culture in the 2000s, there exist a considerable amount of similarities as well as cultural contrast. Although societies around the world emphasize and promote reading and writing proficiency, the ways and reason for education differ.
Silence, nothing but the piercing sound of chalk on a board and the rustling of turning pages. The blackboard filled with the Spanish cursive alphabet, which proved to be more difficult than a young first grader had anticipated. As Amelia Moore, now 58 years-old, reminisces her earliest recollection of school, she frowns as she struggles to remember. As a first grader, Moore is overwhelmed by the rustic style of the old boarding school. The limited space in the classrooms only allowed for ten to twelve desks, while the teacher’s desk sits along the door. When asked about her educational experience in Panama, Moore states, “...education was meant as a way to close the communication gap with the United States.” Panamanian culture emphasises literacy and education for those privileged enough to attend school. Classes, she explains, were never a pleasant experience. The teachers were ruthless and the material was more bothersome than helpful.
However, Moore exhibited a passion for literature. As a custom, her late father began purchasing the morning newspaper every day unfailingly. Finding a definition of literacy is not as easy as it sounds. The Webster definition says that to be literate is to be” able to read and write.” But to some researchers, this definition is too simplistic, leading to multiple models of literacy. Most Americans adhere to the autonomous model, which falls closest to the standard, dictionary definition. Believers in this form say that literacy is a cognitive activity that students learn like any other basic skill. It has a set of proficiencies that one must master in order to be capable of decoding and encoding text (Alvermann, 2009; SIL International, 1999). A competing theory is the ideological model, which claims literacy is intrinsically linked to culture, and therefore what constitutes a “literate” individual is ever-changing. Society is the largest influence on literacy, according to this thought, and it is affected by politics, religion, philosophy and more (Alvermann, 2009; SIL International, 1999). These two are just the tip of the iceberg. For example, some studies recognize “literacy as competence,” which is a “measure of competence to do a given task or work in a given field,” (SIL International, 1999) such as being computer literate. Although more researchers are recognizing and exploring multiple literacies, the one that most influences American schools is the autonomous, cognitive model – the ability to read and write. For many, it seems a simple task, but millions of adolescents are struggling or reluctant readers, and there are many reasons why young readers have difficulty with reading. Even from an early age, Rodriguez is a successful student. Everyone is extremely proud of Rodriguez for earning awards and graduating to each subsequent level of his education. But all his success was not necessarily positive. In fact, we see that his education experience is a fairly negative one. One negative that Rodriguez endures is his solitude. Education compels him to distance himself from his family and heritage. According to Richard Hoggart, a British education theorist, this is a very natural process for a scholarship boy. Hoggart explains that the ?home and classroom are at cultural extremes,? (46). There is especially an opposition in Rodriguez?s home because his parents are poorly educated Mexicans. His home is filled with Spanish vernacular and English filled with many grammatical errors. Also, the home is filled with emotions and impetuosity, whereas the classroom lacks emotion and the teachers accentuate rational thinking and reflectiveness.
Cultural differences pose several barriers for students and may impair their opportunity to learn. These barriers are created by differences in language expression, communication style, preferred learning style, gender-role customs and behaviors, and limited parental involvement due to these cultural or socioeconomic barriers (Ralabate, & Klotz, 2007).
In conclusion, the motivated girl turned influential inspiration became one of the most famous women in history through her literature, albeit she had some trouble getting started in her chosen industry. While Louisa May Alcott is most often identified as an author, she also was a dedicated daughter and sister, a Transcendentalist, and an inspiration. Part of the reason that Louisa May Alcott stands out is because of her interesting family, career, and medical history, but undeniably, the masterpieces she constructed in the form of prose will keep the memory of this outstanding woman alive for as long as persons on this earth can read literature, understand the context in which it was written, and truly comprehend Louisa May Alcott’s purpose for writing.

For this assignment, I completed a survey to assess my school’s literacy program by using a survey that was adapted from by Patty, Maschoff, & Ransom (1996) to analyze the instructional program and the school’s infrastructure. To be able to answer my survey, I needed to go colleagues of mine in the English Department and to my administration to help with these questions. Being a math teacher, we hardly ever discuss the literacy and the students’ acquisition of it in our department meeting during staff development days. Since I am not truly current with literacy acquisition in education, I am hoping to understand more from this process so I can help all my students. I want them to be able to read texts related to math and find information that will be useful to them during the year.

The United States is a country with a diverse existing population today; this country is known as a melting pot of different cultures, each one unique in its own respect.
