Canada is a nation of immigrants and there has always been a discussion on whether or not they’ve had a positive or negative impact on our economy. Overall, Canada’s economy has had a positive effect from immigration. Canada’s immigration policy is, in part, almost like a business when trying to hire a new employee going through a human resource program. Our nation has goals when selecting the right applicants and the main objective is to recruit qualified workers for Canadian employers. We encourage workers with needed skills to better match the supply of labour with demand.

The system in place for immigrants to enter into Canada has helped develop many provinces around Canada. Our nation has created a great point system that allows us to rank each person wishing to immigrate into our country as a skilled worker. The process to let new immigrants into the country is a test taken by each individual. The test evaluates if they score over 67 out of 100 possible points. The assessment scores you on your education, work experience, arranged employment, age, knowledge of English and French languages, and also your adaptability to the country. Having a system that ranks each individual separately creates competition between every immigrant entering Canada. This makes immigrants resolute to create a better life inside a foreign country, bring different skills and creativity to help better our economy.

A younger workforce is also another way immigrants help better our country. With Canada’s aging population its been said that “ as more workers retire the dependency ratio (workers to non workers) is reduced” (page 264). This would allow companies to achieve economies associated with mass production and which in turn would lower prices for consumer products. With lowered prices it would allow each Canadian citizen to purchase more consumer products increasing wealth for each citizen. Immigration also explained two-thirds of our population growth last year, which was 1.2 percent. This is extremely important because without the flow of immigration the population of the ages between 20 to 44 years old would be rapidly declining. This affects our economy in so many ways. For example, 20 to 44 year old age group consists of much of the new real estate being bought and also contributes the most to the taxation revenue. If our taxation revenue starts to fall our government will have to cut back on spending or will overspend causing a deficit.
