Given the especially large number of students you see each semester, I don't expect any recollection of my presence in your COMM150 class-- I certainly wasn't an exemplary enough student to have left any lasting memories (which is both good and bad). But I wanted to share with you a small anecdote, because four years later I've realized that your class served as an important catalyst in the development of my critical thinking abilities.
As a freshmen at the Altoona campus, I took your class on a whim because I needed a Comm class. Of course I was 'confident' (re: cocky) in my abilities, so I didn't study for exams and ended up in a bad place part-way through the semester. That's when you offered an extra-credit assignment that required an analysis on Do The Right Thing. This e-mail is to express my deep gratitude for giving me any credit at all.
I recently revisited the movie-- and my "analysis" -- and it was actually appalling at how poorly developed my analysis was. Instead of analyzing why Spike Lee would portray his characters in a specific way, I decided to analyze why I didn't like them, neglecting to realize that by turning specific characters into stereotypes, he may have been trying to make an important statement. Regardless, the analysis (now, anyways) comes across as the misguided ramblings of a viewer that took everything at surface level.
I didn't have the same "critical eye" for films that I have now while I was in your class... but I wanted to express my thanks for introducing me to a life-long love and respect for films and their makers. I don’t even call it violence when it’s self-defense, I call it intelligence.” Mookie chose violence over peace in the situation, and I can’t help but wonder why. There was nothing intelligent about deciding to break the window. It didn’t help further any cause. It simply destroyed a building that was beneficial to the community (even though the owner wasn’t black). When Sal confronts Mookie about why he did it at the end of the film, Mookie replies with, “Motherfuck a window. Radio Raheem is dead.” Mookie essentially tells Sal that he broke his shop window because a police officer killed Radio Raheem. This is basically analogous to Pilate receiving the blame for Christ’s death. Sal had nothing to do with Radio Raheem’s death, yet Mookie decided to take it out on his shop? This made no sense to me as a viewer.
To start, Mookie did the right thing because property can’t and will not ever equate to human life. Yes what Mookie did was illegal, however Radiohead Raheem’s life is vanished and can never appear again. Sal’s pizzeria is dismantled, but it can be built again with insurance money. Sal only cares about his pizzeria, not the death of Raheem because the first thing Sal says pertains to the broken window, Mookie is the one who brings up Raheem’s death. When Mookie moves to get his money from Sal, Sal says, “ Your money couldn’t begin to pay for the window you broke.” Then Mookie says, “Motherf*cker, Radiohead Raheem is died,”(2:17:49). Mookie tells sal, “You’ll get over it from the insurance Sal, you know the deal,” (2:18:16). Mookie’s message
Critical thinking occurs when a person thinks about a subject or problem to where the improvement of the quality of ones own thinking using skillful analogies, then assessing and reconstructing them. A few important skills that is learned through critical thinking is learning how to discipline oneself in thinking, understanding the world as well as learning themselves. Critical thinking in the business world has many benefits in the process of decision making by employers as well as employees.
November 1998, written for FILM 220: Aspects of Criticism. This is a 24-week course for second-year students, examining methods of critical analysis, interpretation and evaluation. The final assignment was simply to write a 1000-word critical essay on a film seen in class during the final six-weeks of the course. Students were expected to draw on concepts they had studied over the length of the course.
This movie is a wonderful production starting from 1960 and ending in 1969 covering all the different things that occurred during this unbelievable decade. The movie takes place in many different areas starring two main families; a very suburban, white family who were excepting of blacks, and a very positive black family trying to push black rights in Mississippi. The movie portrayed many historical events while also including the families and how the two were intertwined. These families were very different, yet so much alike, they both portrayed what to me the whole ‘message’ of the movie was. Although everyone was so different they all faced such drastic decisions and issues that affected everyone in so many different ways. It wasn’t like one person’s pain was easier to handle than another is that’s like saying Vietnam was harder on those men than on the men that stood for black rights or vice versa, everyone faced these equally hard issues. So it seemed everyone was very emotionally involved. In fact our whole country was very involved in president elections and campaigns against the war, it seemed everyone really cared.
Mookie’s initial action of throwing the trashcan through the window of Sal’s pizzeria was done through impulse. I think Mookie did the right thing but not to the right people. I believe this because Mookie’s reaction did show that he was angered by the actions of the police but the police were not affected in any way from Mookie’s reaction. The police came right back to the same corner the fight had just broke out at and once they return they see Sal’s place burned down. The interest in critical thinking has never waned in the social and political thought, but social criticism reached true prosperity in the Enlightenment. Voltaire and Rousseau, Montesquieu and Locke, Hume, and Kant saw the most important means of formation of free and responsible citizens, harmonious and creative personality in a critical attitude towards the institutions and values. A new wave of criticism of social philosophy, implemented in classical forms, is associated with the names of the supporters of the revolutionary transformation of society. First of all, there may be mentioned the names of Marx, Bakunin, and Proudhon (Lavery, Hughes, & Doran, 2009).
On August 12, 2010, the Governor of Illinois notified the Federal State Employee Union (FSEU) Local 343, of the state’s intent to outsource and privatize the Department of Transportation (DoT) information systems management function (B. Glenn, personal communication, August 20, 2010). In response, Mr. Padilla, the president of the FSEU Local No. 343, requests the FSEU Director of Human Resources, Ms. Glenn to evaluate the notification. The memorandum dated August 20, 2010, includes Ms. Glenn’s reasons and recommendation for opposing the proposal.
Attending college right after high school can be terrifying at times, but I found it is even more intimidating once you go back to school after being out for a few years. Self-discipline has to be trained all over again and the motivation to work hard has to be implemented daily to gain the successful grades each student wants to receive. As you continue to grow, you learn there are many ways to enhance your learning skills and become the most knowledgeable student you could only have imagined being. Using different approaches with the way you learn helps develop a good foundation for each student’s time while attending college. Becoming a well-rounded student takes time and an abundant amount of effort along with understanding your strengths and weaknesses in Life Factors, styles of learning and improving yourself as a critical thinker.
Every day, living creatures are making decisions. Whether the decisions are big or small, they have to be made. As the decisions are performed, there is a process that one goes through. Different types of thinking styles and thought processes are available. The way one feels, believes, attitudes, and relating ideas can play a big part in their thinking styles. Various methods of thinking and thinking styles are used. In this paper the subject is to discuss is three different types of thinking styles. The three different styles discussed will be creative, pessimistic, and optimistic thinking. Creative, pessimistic, and optimistic thinking are three different ways a person can critically analyze any situation. This paper will compare and contrast the three different styles and discuss how each affects the critical thinking process. It will also include critical thinking in the decision- making process by incorporating the discussion on workplace examples that entails the three different types of thinking styles examined. After reading this paper, one will have a full understanding of these thinking styles and the decision making process. Lastly how one may think and how that contributes to their decision process will also be evident.
Every day in our life we take many decisions, some are trivial and inconsequential, but there are certain decisions which carry substantial consequences. These decisions of substantial consequences are difficult to accomplish and to make the right and appropriate decisions, a person should think critically. Critical thinking is a skill of evaluating arguments or propositions with an open mind and making a judgment after proper analysis, interpretation, and evaluation of the situation, and further taking any action. Decisions can be very simple like what you are going to wear today, or very complex like deciding how you want to build your career. Thus, the time taken to decide depends on the complexity of situation
The author Vincent Ruggiero defines critical thinking in his book Beyond Feelings: A Guide to Critical Thinking, as a “search for answers, a quest.” It is the idea that one does not accept claims, ideas, and arguments blindly, but questions and researches these things before making a decision on them. From what I learned in class, critical thinking is the concept of accepting that there are other people and cultures in this world that may have different opinions. It is being able to react rationally to these different opinions.
Chris had just been promoted as an Executive Assistant for Pat the CEO, Chief Executive Officer, of Faith Community Hospital. Pat had given Chris her very first assignment on her first day of work as an executive assistant and that was to gather information so that Pat can present the issues to the board of directors. Faith Hospital is faced with issues that needed attention and the board of directors must be notified of the issues so that a solution can be remedy to help the hospital stay in business.
What critical thinking skills are needed for the leader committed to social justice to effectively communicate at all levels of practice?
“An Army leader is any one who by virtue of assumed role or assigned responsibility inspires and influences peoples to accomplish organizational goals. She or He motivates people both inside and outside the chain of command to pursue actions, focus thinking, and shape decisions for the greater good of the organization.1” But for him to do that effectively and efficiently , he has to be prepared, shaped and refined. There are few institutions to prepare such leaders and CGSC is one of those institutions which are mandated, organized and equipped to prepare such leaders. In implementing its mandate, CGSC has programmed ILE common core C 100 to provide foundations for effective leadership development. The lessons covered in this block of instructions are important pillars of leadership development and impact on officers differently depending on the fields/specialties and the level of positions held. This paper therefore attempts to discuss the relevance of critical thinking and problem solving, group decision making, overcoming biases, planning and order production lessons on my future assignment as a logistics staff officer.
Class of 2012, as we sit here this evening, I would like you to take a look at the classmates sitting around you. Many students have given countless hours of time, energy, and passion to worthy cuases that they have been a part of throughout high school. However, those aren't the only students deserving of recognition this evening. We have students here tonight, who have taken a stand for what they believe in, not even hesitating to compromise their reputations.
