CHAPTER 4 4.1 Search Strategy The main purpose of the study was to determine the relationship between postnatal depression and peer support by way of reviewing primary research articles. The search strategy adopted for this study can be broken down into several steps. The key concepts and terminologies for the study were identified. The synonyms of the terms were then determined which were also included within the search terms. Boolean operators were the chosen search features. Databases from which the literature search would be conducted were chosen. Using Boolean operators, different search expression were created and the search conducted. The results were evaluated and the inclusion exclusion criteria applied to get the articles that meet the inclusion criteria. The search terms and Boolean operators were modified and search conducted again and the results evaluated. This process was repeated across all the databases chosen for the study. 4.2 Search Terminologies The PICO (Population, Intervention, Context, Outcome) framework was used to formulate the question and the search strategy (Glasziou Del Marc & Sailsbury, 2000). Keywords are useful to any study as they enable an investigator to conduct a search that is likely to yield results that are relevant to the study (Melnyk & Fineout-Overholt 2011). Evidence-based practice (EBP) entails the use of explicit, reliable, and judicious evidence to make effective decisions about the care of patients. This DNP student will introduce EBP with the IOWA model. The IOWA model applies to this DNP proposal. The IOWA model is an EBP applicable in healthcare setting and implemented to show the applicability of evidence in nursing to give the best outcome. Doody and Doody (2011) noted that the IOWA model focuses on problem-focused triggers and knowledge in undertaking quality improvement study. The steps involved include topic selection, team formation, evidence retrieval, grading evidence, developing an EBP evidence, implementation of EBP, and evaluation of the progress. The article, Occurrence of depression during the postpartum period and risk factors that affect the development of the depression, is about a study conducted by Demet Aktas and Fusun Terzioğlu in November 20, 2007 until January 30, 2008. This study involved 330 women who recently gave birth at the Women’s Health Education and Research Hospital in Ankara. The goal of this study was to determine the experiences of depression for these women and the risk factor involved that develop into postpartum depression.

Having a child can be the happiest moment of a person’s life. A sweet little baby usually gives new parents tremendous joy. That joy can be accompanied with anxiety about the baby and the responsibility the new parents are faced with. The anxiety, in most cases, fades and joy is what remains. For some new mothers, however, the joy is replaced with a condition known as postpartum depression. “Postpartum depression is a serious disorder that until recently was not discussed in public…Women did not recognize their symptoms as those of depression, nor did they discuss their thoughts and fears regarding their symptoms” (Wolf, 2010). As such, postpartum depression is now recognized as a disorder harmful to both mother and infant, but, with early detection, is highly treatable with the use of psychotherapy, antidepressants, breastfeeding, and other natural remedies, including exercise.
