Desensitization can be best defined as being insensitive, knowing about a certain matter, but not giving effort or much effort into that matter. In the modern world today, it is hard for a person to become involved and interested in something unless it benefits their needs. Even the most important things in life humans may not see in its entirety. The cross which Jesus Christ died upon is recognized as a very important universal symbol around the Catholic Church. It may seem odd, but Catholics desensitize the cross. People can see it every day, understand it to a degree, but not truly know the meaning of the cross. Although terrible what happened to Jesus Christ, his sacrifice and suffering gave humanity an opportunity at eternal life, the best gift of all. As Pastor Steven states, “The cross reveals to us the character of God: His love for lost sinners and His perfect justice meet at the cross”. (Cole) Us Catholics should look forward to viewing the cross and fully understand it. Issues such as selfishness within human beings can lead us to become ignorant towards the cross. We can be so involved with ourselves and not even worry about anyone else, not taking the time to revere the cross of Jesus Christ. People can become unaware of the sacrifices that Jesus Christ had made for us, leading us to make the mistakes again in sin. Real world events that could lead us to desensitize the cross could be mass shootings. This horrible act was done by people who have turned away from God to try to hurt the message Jesus was trying to spread by dying on the cross.
