The Pattern of Devotion in Desdemona’s Language
In the play “Othello”, by William Shakespeare, the characters are given unique, consistent traits that are portrayed through each of their dialogues. Shakespeare bequeaths each one of his characters with their own language. All of the character’s sole forms of language are generated for a specific purpose in the play. The distinctive traits given to each one of their languages are understated yet still complex. One character in particular that demonstrates this complexity is Desdemona. She has a consistent pattern and idiosyncrasy of using strong nouns when referring to Othello.

A moth of peace, and he go to the war, 
The rites for which I love him are bereft me, 
And I a heavy interim shall support 
By his dear absence. Let me go with him” (I.iii.600).
When Desdemona refers to Othello, she uses “my lord” repeatedly throughout her language. She indicates Othello as “her lord” to demonstrate her commitment to him and continues the pattern in her dialogue. “I thank you, valiant Cassio. What tidings can you tell me of my lord?” (II.i.867). Even when she speaks to other characters in the play, she talks bout Othello without using his name. Throughout the play, the reader was shown a loving relationship between Othello and Desdemona that was almost too good to be true. When Desdemona referred the idiosyncrasy of being loyal to her husband by using the noun “duty” and by calling her husband the noun “lord”, it further proved to the reader that she was devoted to her husband. Shakespeare chose this pattern for Desdemona’s language to substantiate to the reader how important Othello was to her and that she stayed by him every step of the way up until her death.
