As I opened the door and the bell chimed, the warm air and sweet aroma surrounded me. The red seats and tile flooring give Milky Moo’s the cheerful ice cream shop feel. The sweet employee politely waited as I tried every ice cream possible. I stared longingly at all of the flavors, finally deciding on coffee ice cream. They fixed my ice cream, and I have a seat in one of the red booths. As I ate my ice cream, a group of loud children ran in. The only threat to such a great place is that it’s also a great place for children. One child began to wail and another began to run in circles, that was my cue to leave. Its wonderful having a nice, clean ice cream shop so close to home. My visit to Milky Moo’s was great, then I decided to go shopping.
Susie’s mother opened the door to let Molly, Susie’s babysitter, inside. Ten-month old Susie seemed happy to see Molly. Susie then observed her mother put her jacket on and Susie’s face turned from smiling to sad as she realized that her mother was going out. Molly had sat for Susie many times in the past month, and Susie had never reacted like this before. When Susie’s mother returned home, the sitter told her that Susie had cried until she knew that her mother had left and then they had a nice time playing with toys until she heard her mother’s key in the door. Then Susie began crying once again.
”On her way home she usually bought a slice of honey cake at the baker’s. It was her Sunday treat. But today she passed the baker’s boy, climbed the stairs, went into the little dark room -- her room like a cupboard --- and sat down on the red eiderdown”(103). The children’s transition is marked by a rivalry, one that surfaces early on in the story and is portrayed through delightful banter and retorts. The children’s bantering relieves some stress created by the unknown tiny steps they are taking in establishing a new type of relationship with their father in the absence of their mother. At no time do the children’s harmless antics towards one another escalate as indicated by critic Tara Baker when she explains that their arguments become deeper than the usual childish bickering. Baker seems to believe the children’s digs into one another are being fueled by difficult situations they have had to deal with lately (170).
The time was now six in the afternoon, and the children had to start putting their Halloween costumes on to be ready for their party down the street. Lucy was dressed as a beautiful mermaid. Lanie was an adorable candy fairy, and last, but not least, Luke was dressed as a rowdy cowboy. Playing his cowboy role, Luke started lassoing his sisters with his rope. On their way to the party, I could see Mary and John’s patience level with Luke was about to explode. In the text, it states “I’m downstairs in the rec room playing zombie attack. No sound. I don’t want mom to know, although I’m pretty sure she guesses.” (p.1) I am sure every kid has had the experience of playing a banned game or engaging in an activity that they know they will get in trouble for. This is even further complicated for Cameron because his mother wants the volume low so people outside can not hear the game. The author paired a shared childhood experience with a scary situation very well. My next connection is a text to text connection about Cameron’s new home. Cameron says “something’s missing. A dishwasher. Seriously. Where’s the dishwasher?”. (p.13) This reminds me of the movie Inside Out when the main character’s family moves to a new home and the main character does not like it. The main character Riley did not like her house because it was empty. Both characters found reasons to be upset with their house that can be easily fixed. My next text to text connection was when the author described the cafeteria such as the announcements from the guidance counsellors, the smell of cafeteria food, and people yelling and talking. In the text it said “ I get on the bus and I take my place near the back, Cody’s gang barking me down the aisle”. (p. 40) This was similar to the description of the character’s experience in Fourth Grade Rats by Jerry Spinelli. This is also similar to my own personal experience of getting onto a school bus full of over-excited classmates. This is probably a somewhat universal student
He takes the children on a journey, cleverly integrating Indigenous culture into the experience by telling stories that relate to the food the boys are served. With crocodile pizza and honey milkshakes, he tells the stories of the young boy who went hunting in the wrong waterhole and the discovery of the stinging bees, followed by spiritual dances.
Sandra's tale brought back much nostalgia for my younger days. Those days when everything was much more simple and happiness came with almost no effort. Cisneros reminds the reader of infantile glee by repeating words, just like a kid would do. She writes, "please, please, please," and "and there! And there!, And there!…" making almost an alliteration of words that realistically depicts the speech of a child ...
Adrienne Rich's poem entitled "Miracle Ice Cream" is a short, yet thoughtfully penned poem that gives reference to playful and memorable experiences during childhood. The author follows to allude to deeper meaning with a stronger final stanza. Rich's beautiful use of language and brilliant placement of meter adds to the power behind this poem intended to elicit a response from the reader which would help relieve stress from everyday life.
Abruptly, a silent signal sent the entire assembly to the benches. Pairs of dexterous hands laced up skates as quickly as possible, while other hands aided in conversation that only the listener was allowed to hear. I was struck by the intimacy of this scene. They all knew each other well. They had come together in the freedom of this one place to share and explore without the encumbrance of parents, teachers, or any other meddlesome adult. I sat bolt upright, feeling very much like someone who had accidentally stumbled into a room full of naked people.
The children couldn’t accept what they thought was so horrible. There was a lot of ignorance and carelessness portrayed throughout this short story. I wearily drag myself away from the silken violet comforter and slump out into the living room. The green and red print of our family’s southwestern style couch streaks boldly against the deep blues of the opposing sitting chairs, calling me to it. Of course I oblige the billowy haven, roughly plopping down and curling into the cushions, ignoring the faint smell of smoke that clings to the fabric. My focus fades in and out for a while, allowing my mind to relax and unwind from any treacherous dreams of the pervious night, until I hear the telltale creak of door hinges. My eyes flutter lightly open to see my Father dressed in smart brown slacks and a deep earthy t-shirt, his graying hair and beard neatly comber into order. He places his appointment book and hair products in a bag near the door signaling the rapid approaching time of departure. Soon he is parading out the door with ever-fading whispers of ‘I love you kid,’ and ‘be good.’
“No, Dani!” I couldn’t believe myself, I was talking to her as if she were a dog. “You are a ‘re-tard’,” I still didn’t really knew what that meant, but using the word made me feel older. “I’m not playing with you anymore.” I tried to look like my mother when she refused to buy me more candy. Dani studied my face for a moment. “Go away!” I exclaimed. That did it. Dani cried, and I felt cold tears sliding down my cheeks too. She scurried away until I couldn’t see her anymore. The big kids were practically choking on their saliva, laughing so hard.
As the kid went into the candy store, the reaction of his face was priceless. Like all kids in a candy store, his eyes livened up and his mouth drooled. It was kind of amusing to watch, but the grandparents loved every second of it. They knew that as the kid grew older, he would go his separate way and would not be as close to them. They wanted to cherish the moment, enjoy every little detail about the boy, and spend as much time with him before he would “leave the nest.”
During the twenty minutes of silent sitting, I observed several different scenes in a coffee shop. It’s interesting to look back on your own feeling and experiences in contrast to one’s seen before you. The first scene observed took place between a father and daughter. They just came back from swimming, as was obvious from their apparel, so they came into the coffee shop for a bite of ice cream. The father, engaging in conversation with his daughter, asked what she wanted to be when she grew up, for which she answered, “A dancer!” The girl, grinning from ear-to-ear, didn’t expect her father to reply “Life is hard. You’ll learn how unrealistic that is later.” The smile quickly faded from her face as she went on enjoying her ice cream. This
We all grabbed our lawn chairs and cozied up next to the roaring red fire. I always sat a little too close, enough to where the fire burnt a hole straight through my favorite pair of flip-flops, assuring me to never make that mistake again. S’mores was all of our favorite bed time snack time and a perfect way to end the night. Every time I would roast my marshmallow until it became slightly brown, mushy, and not too hot in the center; then I 'd put it between two graham crackers and extra pieces of chocolate. One too many s’mores and a belly like later I laid back in my chair and listened as Nancy told us stories. Before going to bed Nancy told us about her favorite past times here as a child and how just like the little girl we saw fishing, she was also afraid of fishing. She told us stories about how much the campground has evolved since she was a child and how every year she promises to take us here and to keep it a tradition. At bedtime Alicia and I crawl into our tents and snuggle up in our warm sleeping bags. We talked to each other about how sad we felt that it was almost the end of summer, and how nervous we felt to start our freshman year of high school. However, our conversations ended when Nancy yelled at as from the other tent to keep quiet and go to bed. I’d fallen asleep that night to the sound of the fire crackling out and the crickets chirping
