In her narrative essay, “FYB”, Zadie Smith expresses her belief that if one redirects their mindset to a more limited perspective and uses the limitless Manhattan mentality at certain times, one can arrive at their beach. A beach is a mentality, and Smith finds her beach by coming to peace with Manhattan’s beach. The idea of a person’s “beach” being hard to discover may be observed through Smith’s personal background, as it is almost mythical for this English writer living in Soho, Manhattan to come by a beach.
As I hurriedly walk through the glorious gates to enter Sea World, Florida, a huge smile overtakes my face. The excitement in me is brimming to the top. The warm, loud atmosphere of the numerous groups of people scurrying around, exhilarating me even more. I quickly take in my surroundings, starting from the towering, twisting and turning rollercoasters overhead me, looking at them I feel my stomach clench with terror yet excitement. Then I look over to the countless food courts giving off the most heavenly aromas. I sighed, satisfied and content with what was before me.
There I stand on the Atlantic Ocean beach in Daytona, Florida. It’s 7:49 A.M, June 28, 2015. I feel my size ten feet sink into the frosty sand. With my board in my left arm, and sand covering my body, I seize my direction towards the blue ocean. As I halt at the base of the monumental ocean, I gaze in both directions, not a life in sight. I feel at peace, solitude, in my own meager world. As the crisp ocean mist wipes my sand replete face, I bounce into the ocean with my board under my body, cruising into the profound blue sea.
The waves roll onto white sand beaches and vanishes into non-existence, and another is born and tumbles towards the shore. The setting sun dyes the western sky bright red. People are laughing, talking, and embracing under sunset. I can feel that the warm sand is squished through my toes. The weather is nice. There is not a speck of cloud to be seen in the sky. The sky seems a watercolor painting, mixing red, blue, purple, and etc. I sometimes perceive the foamy mist from ocean sprays my face very lightly as if it is the touch of a soft feather. Through various sounds, I can hear the cry of seagulls circling overhead, and gives the part of Santa Monica beach fascinating character of its own. As time passes, I senses the fresh and gentle breeze. When I close my eyes, then I have the feeling of I sitting alone on the broad sandy beach for a moment. I open my eyes again. The colors swirl together in muddled mass over the sky. The sky turns into blue violet, and the scenery around me is added colorful artificial light. lIt is the most beautiful sight I think and my favorite time. The children frolicking on the
Upon driving on the main bridge over the bay into Sea Isle City New Jersey, the first thing the eye cannot help but fixate on is the tall light blue water tower with the phrase “Smile You’re in Sea Isle City” plastered to its side. Immediately this tower gives tourists and vacationers a sense of happiness, pleasure and relaxation. The island itself is small and narrow. Directly ahead as one drives into the city the crashing waves of the raging ocean can be seen not far from the bay itself. A narrow beach and asphalt promenade line a part of the short coastline. The promenade is lined with restaurants, shops and arcades. Here, majority of vacationers spend their leisurely summers walking, bike riding, skating and rollerblading through the central part of town with an oceanfront view. A few of the hundreds of beach homes and condominiums are visible on either side of the street as one drives along the main drag or “JFK Blvd.” into town. Majority of the island simply consists of asphalt roads, residential homes and paved sidewalks with little room for fields and grass. It is evident in the city’s layout that the small island has been built as a tourist or resort type location for the numerous seasonal vacationers who spend their summers at the shore. The majority of Sea Isle’s land is dedicated to residential use by local homeowners, renters and vacationers (Image 1). A city seemingly built for tourists, lies so close to the raging ocean waters with little to prevent from flooding. The same streets and sidewalks vacationers enjoy leisurely walks on during sunny days can become completely submerged by water. The city can easily become crippled, trapping residents in their homes desperate for evacuation. Why is it that someone would th...
As my family and I sped along the coast, the sour smell of sulfur vents and sea salt pungently gusted through my nostrils. My clothes were damp from the constant spray of seawater. My sense of balance was overcome by the sequential hop from wave to wave and – combined with the
Our dialogue was cut short by the squealing sounds of the lunch cart, signaling the end of our current events session. I bolted down to the recreation office while visions of a beach-related activity flooded my mind. I eventually acknowledged that for medical and safety reasons it would be impossible for patients to leave facility grounds. The focus of my thoughts shifted to images of an artificial beach within the institution. I immediately remembered the second floor patio which was outdoors and easily accessible. When I threw my ideas at the office, everyone was skeptical because of a shortage of staffing, but after two days I was able to enlist an enthusiastic group of volunteers, including kitchen workers, interns and even Ronnie our maintenance man.
Every summer my family and I go to our house in the cape just north of Boston. One hot summer morning, I was leaving the house to meet my family at the beach, suddenly I remembered my mother asked me to pick up a jar of “Kingfish Herring” for her and her friend to snack on at the beach.
But we did go on the boardwalk almost every night. Every night seemed to be different. We tried to experience everything in a different way. Coastal Highway, not unlike the ocean, seems to go on endlessly. When we were near Coastal Highway, I put my window down and let the smell of the sand and sea waft into the car. The rain had started, but it was only a light mist. The temperature had cooled off now too. I decided to take an evening swim. Some of the waves were raising nearly 10 feet. In the evening when we all entered the beach some lifeguards were announcing that tides are so strong. Though I was not
Ever since Sunset Beach has been officially opened to the public, there has been a drastic increase of tourists present. Television programs concluded that at least a thousand people visit the beach everyday. Reasons for their stay are that they feel comfortable with the environment that surrounds the beach front, people who are at the beach are joyous and numerous activities to enjoy, and the fresh scent of the sparkly waters, make the visitors feel calm and pleasurable. So I decided to take a trip there.
