On July 26, 1996 two individuals were walking along the bank of the Columbia River near Kennewick, Washington, did not expect to find one of the oldest complete skeletal remains in the world. While, Kennewick man has gained considerable notoriety, debates have grown over the application of the Native American Graves Protection and Repatriation Act (NAGPRA) and whether the Native Americans or Archaeologists have the rights to the body. As soon as the body was found it was studied by anthropologist James Chatters and he discovered “that the skull had characteristics unlike those of modern Native Americans” (Native Americans and Archeologists). As a result, it did not qualify under the NAGPRA rules. However, conflict arose because the Department of Interior and many Native American tribes are contesting that evidence found by the archaeologists. But, while it goes against Native American beliefs to inspect the bodies of their ancestors, any evidence that was gathered during the trial, in regards to the origin of Kennewick man, was necessary in order to find out to whom he belongs. Now, the skeleton is currently being kept at the Burke Museum in Washington State, where it is not on display. I believe that is where he should stay until more information about him is found. Finally, in regards to the presentations, I will be taking about who cares about the Kennewick Man, Lise Anderson and Jen Gray will be tackling the topic of opinions, Matt Ruffcorn will do the basic information about the Kennewick Man, Austin Eibel will talk about the conflict affected and finally, Matt Hellinghouse will talk about the research from an archaeological perspective.
Nomads of the Rainforest is a film which focuses on a tribe in Ecuador called the Waorani. The purpose of this documentary is to discover how this culture has maintained their cultural identity amidst Western culture and remained an enigma. The Waorani were known as savages and likely to attack any outside influence indiscriminately. These people were a mystery due to the fact that their savagery was brushed against the landscape of an egalitarian society in which all people were equal and must contribute to their society. The message of the film is to describe the Waorani lifestyle and how the rainforest is critical to their maintaining their nomadic lifestyle that has been a part of their culture for centuries.
I think this article actually refers to Americian. The author spelled the key words backwards, like Nacirema and Notgnihsaw. Although the author used different way to describe our daily activities, we still can see some similarities from the article. Also, I agree with you that the words the author used to describe each activity make it stranger and let people think this is a barbaric nation. We have the same things in our society, but if we are in the different situation or view our culture in the different way, people’s attitude would change and that’s why the differences exist.
Throughout this unique class, we have explored many amazing facets of the Dine’ people. From stories, to pieces of art, to the language itself, the beauty of Navajo culture is easily seen by all who have the fortune to come into contact with them. Unlike Navajo culture, however, the Western world uses a very loose definition for “beauty” that typically revolves around physical traits: a beautiful girl usually looks a certain way, a beautiful voice usually sounds a certain way, and a beautiful painting usually looks a certain way. The Western world merely looks at physical beauty and from this vision has developed a formula for what is and what isn’t considered beautiful. To the Navajo People, beauty is a much deeper, more meaningful concept. As we have explored in class, the beauty way of life, hozho, rules the way that a Navajo person should act and interact in daily life. Hozho is not only physical but also mental, spiritual, and purposeful.
A renaissance among the Native Americans has been brewing since the 1960’s, building economic, cultural and social revival. Financial support from casinos has helped, together with a civil rights focus on preserving language, spiritual traditions and political independence (IndiaCountryTodayMediaNetwork.com). The number of Native American Indians has been steadily increasing through recent decades, at least according to US Census statistics. Gambling is not an economic venture for OIN alone, approximately forty percent of the 562 tribes have established gambling businesses that contribute to a total of about 15 billion dollars each year. Similar to the Turning Stone Casino, the other casino and bingo operations also spurs the purchase of motels, resorts and manufacturing (113). The OIN has moved into the 21st Century with technology, information, embracing cultural roots and connecting with their community. The OIN has opened a cultural center on the reservation near Syracuse which houses historical and live exhibits of music, art, baskets, pottery, language and traditional dress (Gage). There is a weekly newspaper, distributed throughout the Reservation and Turning Stone properties. A college scholarship fund has been established for OIN students (Gage). A work to learn program is available at the reservation for students to have hands-on vocational training. Efforts are ongoing to reduce pollution, protect wetlands and responsibly handle recycling. As a preface for the tragedy, the crime committed by Tantalus should be staged first. The killing of Pelops by Tantalus, his father, serving him to the gods will be the beginning of Niobe’s tragedy. After these events, Niobe becomes unusually fixated with being a mother. After having 12 children, seven daughters and 7 sons, she swears to the gods that she’ll never hurt her children as her father attempted with his own; and that she wants to dedicate her life to become the best mother to exist ever. Niobe is having a recurrent dream with a spider, which is in fact weaving a net around her; she goes to the Oracle to find out the significance of the dream. As a response, the Oracle tells her that the spider represents her obsession with her children, whom are not part of the gods’ realm and hence should be subjects of adoration. The spider really represents Arachnae and her fate after challenging Athena. Niobe doesn’t understand the Oracle and feels that even the gods are jealous of her fortune. During a celebration in Leto’s honor, she claimed that she deserved more worship than Leto as she was the daughter of a god, a queen as had seven times more offspring than Leto. She even dismissed the celebration; the worshippers leave.

In Zeami Motokiyo’s Noh play, Atsumori, he retells the story of Atsumori as seen in Heiki Monogatari. The story revolves around the young Taira no Atsumori who was killed at the age of fifteen by Kumagai of the Minamoto clan during the Genpei War at Ichinotani. Atsumori was left behind and spotted by Kumagai along the Suma shore. Kumagai felt sorry for Atsumori because he was about the same age as one of his sons and was torn between whether or not to kill him. He decides to kill Atsumori because if he did not, then someone else from his clan would. He figured it would be better for him to do it because he would pray for Atsumori after his death. Shortly after killing Atsumori, Kumagai renounces his ways and becomes a monk name Rensho and travels back to Ichinotani to pay his respects to and pray for the soul of Atsumori. This play is a continuation from Heike Monogatari because it tells the tale of Kumagai and what he encounters in his new life as a monk while stressing the importance of Buddhist values, such as nonattachment and karma, and character transformation of warrior to priest and enemy to friend.

Indeed, many global cities face compelling urban planning issues like urban sprawl, population, low density development, overuse of non-renewable natural recourses, social inequities and environmental degradation. These issues affect the cities themselves, the adjacent regions and often even globally. The resulting ecological footprint upsets the balance in adjacent rural and natural areas. Unplanned or organic development leads to urban sprawl, traffic problems, pollution and slums (as evident in the case of Mumbai city). Such unplanned development causes solid waste management and water supply to fall inadequate. Urban sprawl gives rise to low density development and car dependent communities, consequently leading to increased urban flooding, low energy efficiency, longer travel time and destruction of croplands, forests and open spaces for development.

Kashmir — a beautiful mountain state with clear rivers, evergreen forests and one of the highest death rates in the world. It is at the center of an age-old dispute between Pakistan and India that has dragged on from the independence of both nations over fifty years ago to the present time, with no resolution in sight. The combined population of the two nation totals over a billion, so no conflict between them is of passing importance, especially when nuclear weapons are involved. Pakistan and India share a common heritage, language, and traditions, yet the subject of Kashmir can push them to the brink of annihilation. Fifty years of animosity have built up as a result. A proxy war still brews in Kashmir, claiming dozens of lives every day, running up a casualty total over time into the hundred thousands.
