Matthew Arnold, a man with such creativity, technique, and intellectual mastery when it comes to poetry.
Arnold, born December 24, 1822 in Laleham, United Kingdom was the oldest of two brothers; William
Arnold and Tom Arnold. He is also known as the son of Thomas Arnold and Mary Penrose Arnold.
Matthew Arnold was genuinely; remember for his elegantly argued critical essays. As a child he attended a school called “Rugby” most of his young life where his father worked at as a head master. Later Arnold graduated from Rugby and studied at Balliol College, and Oxford University. In 1844 he received his ungraduate degree at Oxford, he then returned to Rugby to teach classics(1-1). In 1850 he Arnold ended up meeting and falling in love with a young women named Frances Lucy Wightman, the daughter of Sir
William Wightman, Judge of the Court of Queen's Bench. He planned on marrying her, but her father wouldn’t it because Arnold did not seem to have the financial means to support a wife and future children. "Arnold earned about 300 dollars a year from his Lansdowne House appointment. The Oriel fellowship was worth about 120 dollars a year, but this of course would not be paid if he got married"
Hamilton stated. He was forbidden to see his beloved until he could prove that his financial situation had changed. However, both were able to exchange letters on a regular basis. In August 1850, the Judge took his family on a trip to Flanders and Germany. Arnold, himself on a trip to the Italian lakes, stayed in Calais for a few days, just hoping to catch a glimpse of Frances Lucy (5-6). Later some time that year Arnold was appointed an Inspector of Schools, a job which would earn him 700 dollars a year enough to support his wife and fu...

...newed religious faith and morals, are particularly represented of main stream Victorian intellectual concerns (1-2). Arnold’s gentle and subtle style to these problems led to criticism as an art form, and influenced almost every major English critic. T.S Elliot, Lionel Trilling, and Harold Bloom are just a few examples. Although the huge influence he had on other poets to release their inner most feelings with complete transparency, can easily be noticed in writers. Later in life Arnold made two lecturing tours of the United States. On April 15, 1888 at
age sixty-six Matthew Arnold had died. While in Liverpool he was waiting for his daughter to return from
America. He was running for a tram car in the city when he began to suffer from a heart attack. On that
day the world had lost one of the best poets of all time, and that is the story of Matthew Arnold.
At the end of the film when Victor and Thomas returned back to their reservation Thomas asked Victor if he knew why his father left, his answer was he didn’t mean to. I don’t believe Arnold ever intended to leave even though he talked about disappearing excessively, he loved everyone too much. When Arnold left, I believe the regret of leaving ate him alive which is why I consider him to be the fourth heart break. The regret and always wondering what life would have been life if he hadn’t of left tormented his heart and mind every day that he was away. I believe that Arnold living with this regret caused him to break his own

Growing up, Victor and Thomas didn’t get a long so well. Thomas was often annoying and Victor just wanted to be left alone. Thomas often talked of Arnold and Victor never wanted to talk about his deserted father. The last thing that Victor wanted to do was talk about the father that bailed on...
Arnold flees to Phoenix, AZ where he carries out the rest of his days, never speaking to his family again, but silently wishing that he could go back home. He dies before overcoming his feelings of guilt, and upon hearing of his death Victor decides to go to Phoenix to retrieve his fathers personal artifacts. Victor has no money with which to fund his trip south, however his friend Thomas offers him enough money to make the journey provided that Victor brings him along. Together, they set out on a bus to Phoenix, and along the way, with the help of...
Arnold seems like the typical teenage cool guy with his roughed up look. In this short story, Joyce Oates says, “She recognized most things about him, the tight jeans that showed his thighs and buttocks and the greasy leather boots and the tight shirt, and even the slippery friendly smile of his, that sleepy dreamy smile that all the boys used to get across ideas they didn’t want to put into words” (Oates 5). When he was young, Arnold seemed like a child with no education, except for the knowledge that had been passed down the family –like the need to pick peas before the sun comes up, while they are still cool – pieces of information like this would be all that he needs to get by when (we assume) he inherits the farm from his father. So he would not be very bright by today's standards. Naivety would be a characteristic you would expect from him as well – it seems that in his community, mostly everybody would accept what is given to them and not question it. Uncle Andy for instance immediately believed the sheriffs verdict, be it correct or not, and is later quoted to have s...

To begin with, Emily Dickinson and Walt Whitman are the most famous poets from the time period when they first started to write poems. Their poems have a big difference with the backgrounds because of the way they tell the story or how they want the readers to feel about it. Walt
It is mentioned multiple times that Arnold knows “‘lots of things’” (Oates 3). Not only does he know Connie, but he is able to list off a number of kids even though he himself is not from around there. Arnold is even able to call Connie on her bluff and confidently state that Connie’s family will not be coming back for her, and that they are at “‘Aunt Tillie’s sitting around drinking’” (Oates 6). The only way Arnold would be able to know exactly where and what Connie’s family is doing would be that he has supernatural powers— abilities that are commonly associated with the Devil. This theory is even more feasible when you realize that author stated that “‘Arnold Friend is a fantastic figure: he is Death, he is the 'elf-knight' of the ballads, he is the Imagination, he is a Dream, he is a Lover, a Demon, and all that.’” (Coulthard
