Depression is one of the most commonly diagnosed forms of mood or emotional disorders. It’s normal for people to occasionally feel down or sad, but it’s not normal when the feelings last longer than a few days. Depression will interfere with ones’ daily life and causes difficulty for the one afflicted and for their loved ones. Depression can also cause physical pain, and can interfere with a person’s daily routine as well as their life. What is sad about depression is that it has driven many people to commit self-harm or even suicide. Depression can also occur in people without a family history of depression. Studies are being done to understand what genes may make someone more likely to suffer from depression. Traumas, losses, or stressful situations can cause a depressed state. Post-traumatic stress disorder can tie in with depression and it can also be caused by some sort of trauma, loss, or stressful situation. Not everyone with depressive illnesses experience the same symptoms. The symptoms can range from mild to severe, depending on how much they interfere with the person’s life. Symptoms can include continued feelings of sadness, hopelessness, or guilt. They can also include feeling worthless, helpless, or irritability. The problem with this is that not everyone shows the signs or symptoms of depression the same way. Major depressive disorder is one of the most common mental disorders diagnosed in the United States. Women have a seventy percent higher chance of experiencing depression during their lifetime than men are. Non-Hispanic blacks are 40% less likely than non-Hispanic whites to experience depression during their lifetime. The average age of diagnoses for depression is thirty-two years old. And children who suffer from depression are more likely to develop other serious illnesses during adulthood. Children with depression may be terrified of leaving a parents side, or may begin worrying about the death of a parent. Children may also get into trouble and feel like no one understands them. These are sometimes seen as part of being a child and going bthrough changes, which is an inaccurate generalization. By the time teens turn fifteen years old, girls are twice as likely as boys to have suffered from a depressive disorder. But when teens are depression, it can come at a time when changes are continuously happening. Teens are dealing with their identities, and the issues of sexuality and hormones are becoming a bigger part of their lives. Depression with teens can tie in with disorders such as eating disorders or substance abuse. Teens who are depressed are also at an increased risk for attempted or successful
