Development of Dentition
Humans have two dentitions in their lifetime, i.e. the primary (deciduous) and secondary (permanent). Each dentition consists of teeth with different shapes, sizes and functions. The classes of teeth developed throughout our life span are:
• Incisiform (incisors) - Incisors are the pair of eight teeth directly situated in the front and center of our mouth, i.e. four in each upper and lower jaw. These single-rooted teeth are extremely important since they all have sharp edges which are used for cutting and biting food into small chewable pieces.
• Caniniform (canines) - On each side of incisors in each jaw, there are four canine teeth in both primary and permanent dentitions. They are located at the 'corners' of the dental …show more content…

Tooth development occurs within the bone of the developing jaw in bony crypts separate from the oral epithelium. The tooth starts to erupt after the formation of the root begins until it assumes its final position in the mouth with its occlusal surface in the occlusal plane. For teeth to become functional, considerable movement is required to bring them into the occlusal plane. There are three phases of tooth eruption which involves the movement of the teeth namely:
 Pre-eruptive tooth movement
This movement is made by the primary and permanent tooth germs within the tissues of the jaw before they begin to erupt. During the early part of tooth formation known as the follicular phase, the follicle enlarges concentrically in every direction. It may slightly move facially within the alveolar bone but with no or minimum eruptive movement. The tooth starts to erupt and the pre-eruptive spurt phase of eruption begins, when crown formation is complete and root formation starts.
 Eruptive tooth
