Dentistry is an industry that is constantly evolving. Every day new techniques, instruments, procedures and discoveries are made. One thing becoming more and more popular in dentistry are dental lasers. Dental laser use in dental offices is rapidly growing because all of the advantages they provide to both the dentist and the patient. With the different types and strengths of the different lasers like hard tissue, soft-tissue, carbon dioxide, argon lasers and more almost any dental treatment can be benefited by using one. Lasers are allowing procedures to be performed quicker, more effectively and more comfortably. The most popular soft tissue lasers are the Nd:YAG the Co2 and the diode laser. Soft tissue lasers are highly absorbeable by water and hemoglobin (oxygenating protein in red blood cells) making them more effective in soft tissue. Soft tissue lasers are used in all different specialties of dentistry. They are used for biopsys and lesion removal, they can easily remove small areas of tissue. The co2 laser is popular in periodontal procedures because it can cut very quickly and deeply. They are perfect for soft tissue surgeries such as frenectomies, gingivectomies, and biopsies. It is the best laser to use to control bleeding in an area and leaves a residue of char that can actually serve as a biological dressing. Soft tissue lasers can also aide in the destruction of ulcers and diseased tissue. Soft tissue lasers are becoming more popular in cosmetic dentistry in removing gingival to show more of the tooth.
