Trevor Doubek Professor Melissa Laudani English Comp 1 17 November 2014 Styx Research Paper After the 1984 breakup of the band Styx, many questioned whether the Styx legacy could continue after the bands vocalist/keyboardist/songwriter, Dennis DeYoung, was voted out of the band after the release of their theatrical album Kilroy was Here. A huge legal battle between the band and DeYoung broke out and lead to a change in naming rights, a change in the publishing rights of songs, and eventual the break up of a legendary band. Since the dismissal of Dennis, the band members have continued touring and recording hit records however, they know the importance of proper legal documents and having a well-written band-partnership agreement. Styx formed …show more content…
Despite the success, Paradise Theatre was another theme album written by DeYoung and furthered the tension with the band (Styx). The bands manager recalled, “I remember Tommy coming into my room in Tokyo and saying, ‘Please, for God sake, lets not do another concept album. We need some rock ‘n’ roll.’” Unannounced to the band, Dennis was already working on another concept album, Kilroy was Here, a story of a future where rock & roll was outlawed. Kilroy was Here was also a rebuttal to accusations made by a California religious group that the band backward-masked satanic messages in their song Snowblind …show more content…
Tommy was touring with the band Damn Yankees that included Ted Nugent. During shows, Shaw and Ted would make fun of DeYoung’s song “Babe” resulting in Shaws guitar getting smashed on stage. Along their tours, Styx and Damn Yankees encountered each other. For the first time since 1984, Dennis DeYoung and Tommy Shaw met together and talked about tension between each other. In late 1990, Styx, once again, disbanded. The band reunited again in 1995 except for drummer John Panozzo who was suffering from health problems and later passes away (Styx). The tour was halted until after the funeral. Todd Sucherman (Styx), who was filling in during Johns absents, became the permanent replacement for John. As Styx began work with their new album, Dennis had begun to develop light sickness and sensitivity to heat. Styx released Brave New World in 1999 featuring the original band line-up plus Todd. As the band went on tour Dennis’ conditions grew worst. James Young and Tommy Shaw decided that the tour would go on whether or not Dennis was going to join them. This erupted into a massive legal battle between Dennis DeYoung and
his death in 1990, making him the third Keyboardist to die while in the Grateful Dead. He was quickly replaced by Bruce Hornsbey. Robert Hunter and John Perry Barlow were in charge of lryics for the most part. Owen Stanely was for years their beloved manager.

The Police were a three part band composed of Andy Summers the guitarist, Steward Copeland the drummer and Gordon Mathew Sumner the bass guitarist and singer. Before the band was formed Steward Copeland was part of the band Curved Air. In 1976 the band disbanded leaving Copeland without a job, or passion. Copeland yearned to join another band and reunite music with his life; coincidently he and Gordon met up at a local jazz club and appreciated each other enough to start a band. Soon after the two of them released their first song “Fall Out”, the two of them invited a Henry Padovani to join the band, who gladly accepted [why?]. In 1977 the three of them quietly toured with Mike Howlett as a project band for a Gong reunion – who Mike Howlett was formerly a part of. Copeland was almost excluded from this tour due to Mike choosing a different drummer. Luckily that drummer was busy and the band kept together. The four of them came under the name Strontium 90. A little while after that gig Andy Summers proposed to join the band on the condition that Padovani would be kicked out. Both Copeland and Gordon resisted after the idea at first due to the loyalty to Padovani, but after a few more concerts Summers was in and Padovani was informed that he was out of the band due to his limited abilities as a guitarist. Coming to distress in early 1978 the band accepted a shallow deal for money as a band in a gum commercial. The commercials director had only one condition, that they dye their hair blond for the shoot. The band was blessed to get this opportunity as later known because the blond hair became a trade mark of the band. The band’s first album was a hardship for them; they had a small studio and low budget, provided by Copeland’s older ...
