Traced from the 7th century BCE in Athens, democracy is an important aspect of our socio-economic life today as is a major determinant of good governance. Democracy defines as “government by the people and for the people.” The definition entails that citizens of a given state have an active participation in both their civic and political lives. The concept involves a system of choosing political leaders through a free and fair election (Newton, 2010). It is codified in the constitutions of most states as a fundamental right and freedom that need be upheld. Other forms include the parliament and presidential, and hybrid of direct democracy. A representative democracy entails a system in which citizens’ vote for a representative who enacts legislations and policies to govern the community and maintain order in the society (Janda, 2012). On the other hand, a direct democracy is a form that the people vote directly for the policies they want by carrying out a referendum. In a parliamentary democracy, which is a representative one, the parliament is elected by the representatives chosen by people and can be dismissed by the officials in case of misconduct (Newton, 2010). The presidential democracy, unlike the parliamentary one, it is the president, who is democratically elected by the people, who is the head of the government and can dismiss the parliament, and at some states he or she is given the mandate to elect the Parliament. A hybrid democracy entails a semi-direct form of democracy that allows people to participate in selecting their policies but at the same time it is the Presidential consent that will pass that particular piece of legislation. The result of this is the election of poor quality leaders who do not deliver, for instance, the complaints that Americans have against the Obama’s government (Newton, 2010). Additionally, the morale of the electorates may fade due to the constant poor selection of leaders who are incompetent, and this affects and diminishes the spirit of democracy. Moreover, there is dictatorship of the majority because of the fact that the majority always win especially in an election. Political influence on democracy also amounts to the disadvantages of democracy (Janda, 2012). Politicians always incite people to vote fo or against somebody or a given statute, and because people are politically vulnerable and susceptible to influence, the result is poor governance that results in economic degradation and political
