“We’ve all got both light and darkness inside us. What matters is the part we choose to act on. That’s who we really are.” This quote from J.K. Rowling is powerful in the distinction of the light and the darkness, protagonist and antagonist, good and evil. On the outside, our appearance and the way we represent ourselves does not always show the truth behind the mask. It does not show what we are really made of as a person. In The Dark Knight by Christopher Nolan, his image of good and evil can be depicted very well in the good, Batman or Bruce Wayne, and evil, the Joker. But even though Batman represents good, he still has a dark side. I agree with Nolan on the way he represents that there is no true pure absolute of good in the people and of the society that he portrays in Gotham. Batman or Bruce Wayne try to do their best in saving people from evil and keeping the peace. But he is not a product of the absolute of good. The police are supposed to embody what good and the right of the people are all about, but as shown, law enforcement has killed innocent lives and cannot be pure and symbolize the absolute of good. Then there is Harvey Dent, the white knight; or so called white knight. Even a man thought of so highly and with so much charisma, integrity, and determination to save the city of Gotham from violence, can have their breaking point as well. That is what Christopher Nolan does with the Joker, is that the Joker exemplifies and illustrates evil so well that he eventually brings out that hidden switch inside everybody, gives it to them and makes them flip it on their own. He is the absolute of the bad and evil and I do not think Nolan could have expressed it any better in another character ever again. As bright as the moon shines, there will always be a dark
