One of the very few things that frustrate me to the point where I would argue about it is the provocative matter of gay rights and the people who are against them. Gay marriage should be allowed and taken sincerely as marriage itself is the key to pursuing happiness; that is what most people desire “Happiness”. “Do not get married” is what is told to most gay couples, which changes the meaning of marriage entirely, making it only based on religion and cultures where only a man and a woman are allowed the right to marry. A large number of people argue otherwise since they consider it an illegal act in terms of culture and an iniquity in terms of religion. As an institution that has become more democratic, and is considered to be a human right, marriage should be made available to couples regardless of gender as gay marriage happens all the time, because it is a bond between two people; So We might as well take our head out of the sand and recognize it due to it already existing.
Opponents of such legislation do not want discrimination passed into law and are protesting at every opportunity. One must understand the reasons that people want to ban same-sex marriage before he or she can effectively argue about the subject. Many advocates of same-sex marriage bans say that allowing gays and lesbians to marry would degrade the institution of marriage because marriage is only supposed to exist between a man and woman. In addition, allowing same-sex marriage would cause problems for society (Issues and Controversies on File). One theory why opponents may fight against same-sex marriages is that heterosexual marriages have long reinforced traditional gender roles within marriage and that allowing same-sex marriages would cause males to lose their authority to subordinate females as heterosexual couples begin to model same-sex marriage gender equality (Calhoun 157).
What is at stake is more than the material benefits of marriage and the use of the word. It is about which values will dominate in our society. • Paragraph 9: Conservatives see that their political values are under attack when it comes to same-sex marriage. This is a serious matter for their politics and moral values as a whole. • Paragraph 10: Progressives divides into two minds when it comes to same-sex marriage.
Anna Katherine Harper Mrs. Smith English 10 14 April 2014 Homosexuality & Gay Marriage Opposing Paper “Our culture has accepted two huge lies. The first is that if you disagree with someone’s lifestyle, you must fear or hate them. The second is that to love someone means you agree with everything they believe or do. Both are nonsense. You don’t have to compromise convictions to be compassionate.” –Rick Warren The issue in today’s society is that you either have to love homosexuals and agree with them or you have to hate them and disagree with how they live their life.
However, boycotting heterosexual weddings to reverse the state’s ruling against homosexuals is a clever idea. This idea has the potential to sabotage the government’s plan to make money off of weddings, especially same-sex marriages. There can’t be any economic growth if both heterosexual and homosexual couples decide to postpone their weddings due to unequal treatment of the other. Therefore, straight couples that realize the sincerity of being deprived of a long time dream have now switched sides. Legalization of same-sex marriage could potentially provide homosexuals with the same rights, and benefits of their heterosexual counterparts.
Same-Sex Marriage The United States is known world wide for its civil rights and freedoms. Many Americans are appalled by the idea of same-sex marriages. What?s wrong with the idea of two people who care greatly for one another wanting to spend their lives together? The gay community is misunderstood because many straights are not willing to listen. These individuals would rather just be closed-minded in this situation and reticent to really think about what this means to the gay community and the country.
Our society revolves around equality conspicuously in this age. As Charlize Theron once said, “Marriage equality is about more than just marriage. It's about something greater. It's about acceptance.” She, with no doubt, states that possessing the right of marriage, in same sex couples, is more meaningful than one could imagine. The allowance of same sex marriage means a broader acceptance by the surrounding people in the community.
However, due to the different sexual orientations of the two partners, problems often occur, causing emotional harm to"closet gays," their partners, and their children (Harbinger 683). If gay marriage were legal, homosexuality would be legitimate. Thus, the number of "closet gays" would decrease, as acceptance of their sexual orientation increases. In short, society would be spared a lot of trouble--the breakup of a family or dissatisfaction with one's life, especially of the homosexual partner, as she or he tries to comply with society's standards. Same-sex marriage is just in that it provides gay couples with the same rights as heterosexual couples.
Similarly, this leads to the discussion of homosexuals having the right to marry in society. Ultimately, conflict from the opposing position of ‘against’ gay marriage may arise that gay marriage can destroy the concept of marriage and mock the importance of procreation. In reference to this; everyone in society has the right to marry regardless of gender, thus it should be socially acceptable. However, this is why it is significant to discuss both sides of the argument, regardless of if you are ‘for’ or ‘against’ gay marriage in society. In relation to homosexuals, contradiction constantly arises that gay marriage should not be legalised.
To not give everyone the same opportunity to have a happy marriage and family is unlike us. This problem is bringing a lot of hate, the same hate that was used in racial discrimination so why not give gays equal rights like everyone else. Andrew Sullivan wrote a article that shares his experiences of coming out and being accepted. When puberty hit he started to realize he wasn’t the same. He knew that his marriage is not going to be the same as his parent’s marriage.
