In all corners of the world, you can expect to find a culture practicing some type of tradition annually, monthly, weekly, or even daily. The practice of many traditions, whether it be religious or not, are often times debated about, though. Even though the true meaning of many traditions can be viewed as controversial, we must also be aware of the powerful impact some traditions can hold over some people than other cultural events. Tradition in and of itself is one of the most comforting things life has to offer. A weekly afternoon tea with family after a busy week can be all that a person looks forward to during their trek of stressors. It allows humans to think upon the past successes and failures of our past generations, and it makes one aware our their beginnings. Independence Day, more referred to as the Fourth of July, celebrates the adoption of the Declaration of Independence, a document that declared America no longer a part of the British Empire. The celebration of this holiday commemorates the hard-work and finalization of a document that would secure the freedom of the then thirteen American colonies. Holidays such as Memorial Day also commemorate the memory of something: the sacrifices American soldiers have made for this country through the army. It allows for all people to become grateful to have so many people die in order to protect this country in its most needed times. Traditions like Martin Luther King, Jr. Day also remind us of past events. The annual celebration of this day allows for contemplation of our mistakes and the country’s strength to persevere and learn more as a whole. Though the idea and representation of many traditions are not ideal, there are many steps that can be taken in order to alleviate the barriers that some cultural events hold. Tradition provides a path of levelness throughout many communities, and the impact of it can create a deep passion within an individual. “A nation’s culture resides in the hearts and souls of its people.” This statement made by Mahatma Gandhi drives home the fact that without the people, tradition is no longer a subject of reality, nor does it have such an important impact on the humans that celebrate it.
