Abstract
Decision making models can be very effective in problem solving. Scheduling is a big problem at Direct HomeHealth Care and a solution needed to be found. Scheduling software which can be very expensive was the only conclusion that could be reached. With much thought and analysis a resolution was reached with critical thought and a decision making model from the Small Business Development Center.
Decision making models can be very helpful in analyzing a problem and setting up a step by step process to evaluate and come to a favorable conclusion. Recently there has been a problem at my agency with scheduling and the difficulty the on call schedulers
have with toting around several very large scheduling books. The Small Business Development Center has a decision making model to assist with problem solving and I have chosen their web sight to aid with this problem.
The first step in this decision making model is to recognize a problem exist and set a solution objective. Direct HomeHealth Care’s everyday business is making sure patients are scheduled properly and taken care of by nursing assistants. There are approximately 250 patients and 250 nursing assistants. Scheduling books are used to keep track of every patient and every nursing assistant that is scheduled to see that patient. Six flags is a company that has 29 theme parks with a Chief Corporate Engineer, Larry Chickola. Larry overseas all the projects for the parks and has teams of engineers that help take care of technical issues and building and construction. All six flags projects have a comprehensive plan for completing the work in a timely fashion. They have written statements as to what work is to be done and dated schedules for completion. They also have to include tasks and sub tasks all being figured into the budget. There is a “work package,” which is a group of activities assigned to break down each task and sub task to fit these into manageable quotas. They feel this is the key to managing logistics.
The key stakeholders for this system change, and to help implement the strategy on providing new patient navigators would be the financial director, chief nursing officer, floor nurses, the hospitalists, and a group of patients and their family. Identifying the key stakeholders is important because with providing new services to a health care facility this group of people will be responsible for accepting the strategy to put in place which includes adding a new job title, approving the salary and the number of people to be hired, on down to how each navigator will be trained and oriented. Although the patients and their may not have much choice in the beginnings of the process of the system change, they can have a say and impact on helping in figuring out the role, and where there are gaps in the care during stays at the hospital, as well as helping in the interview process.
The four simple steps taught me how. Making decisions will be significantly easier if I utilize the DDM. I know that the D.A.R.E. Decision Making Model will be beneficial to me even as I grow older and I am grateful that I have learned such a useful tool to implement in my life. D.A.R.E. has taught me useful techniques, tips, and strategies that will undoubtedly impact my actions in the future.

This paper explores the legal, ethical and moral issues of three healthcare colleagues by applying the D-E-C-I-D-E model as a foundation of decision making as found in Thompson, Melia, and Boyd (2006). Issues explored will be those of the actions of registered nurse (RN) John, his fiancé and also registered nurse (RN) Jane and the Director of Nursing (DON) Ms Day. Should I get married to her or should I take this new job? Your decisions may affect many people or only yourself. In this paper I will present a decision-making model. I will describe a decision that I made at work using this model and how critical thinking impacted that decision.
Three distinct decision making processes are programed decisions, operations research, and non-programed decisions (Dunn, 2010). Programed decisions are those made routinely and are well-known to the person making the decision (Dunn, 2010). Often these issues have standard rules and regulations that encompass them (Dunn, 2010). As stated by Dunn (2010), “operations research is closely aligned with systems analysis and is defined as the use of mathematical models, analytical methods, or structured inquiry to analyze a complex situation and identify the optimal approach” (p. 44). The third decision making process is non-programmed decisions, which are out of the ordinary having no typical solution (Dunn, 2010).
The journey of my decision analysis learning process has been a roller coaster ride. While I enjoyed reading, understanding and learning about the various methodology and aspects of decision analysis, I also find myself stressed, frustrated and ready to give up. For me, the concept about what is decision analysis, the utility of decision analysis, and the topics on decision bias, ethics, complexity and controversy of decision analysis make sense to me as I understood what they are and how they can impact a decision making process. Quantitatively, while I enjoy experimenting and learning the R, Rattle and Excel Decision Tree Plan, statistically, I am frustrated as I am unable to come up with the correct answers when it comes to the quantitative models and calculations such as the probability matrices, binomials, conditional probability, and Markov modeling. Learning the functionalities and seeing an outcome from the R software and knowing what an excel can do to a set of data is intriguing yet exciting to me,

Rational decision making is one of the most common problem solving methods and can be used to solve almost all problems. Rational decision making and problem solving processes can be explained in a logical manner. Effective leaders use rational decision making processes to identify the problem, think up solutions, evaluate alternatives along with select a solution, implement and evaluate the final solution. In rational decision making leaders analyze the problem to achieve the most efficient choice through different possible alternatives from different scenarios before making a selection.
Some decisions prove to be vital and any miscalculation that may be involved may prove dire for the individual or the organization. In identifying the criterion to use while evaluating different decisions, many factors pertaining the structure should be considered. The pros and cons of every decision made should be evaluated to ensure that the option chosen has the most positive effect on the individual and the organization. Some of the activities that may require keen decision making include project development, finance and operations. With the knowledge attained it will be easier to cope with tough decisions that may come up in my career. Decision making models may be generated to give an in depth view to the problem and also provide critical analysis ability. It is also vital noting that for those in managerial positions, they face a bigger task in decision making. A good understanding of the business function and structure will provide an in depth knowhow to those that have studied the
