Death in William Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet

Romeo and Juliet die untimely deaths as a result of Verona's typical

feuding society that they grew up in. Many would agree this

description is extremely accurate though there are some other issues,

which also may have had an influence on Romeo and Juliet's tragic

deaths. The other focus will be on the language used by Shakespeare

and how it points to Romeo and Juliet's death yet enthralls the

audience's interest throughout the play.

The justification that the feuding was the cause of Romeo and Juliet's

death is emphasised clearly on the chorus at the beginning of the play

'which but their children's end nought could remove'. This signifies

that the feud was so extreme, the only way the Capulets and Montagues

would bury the strife between the families would be Romeo and Juliet's

deaths.

Capulet and Montague are too alike for their own good 'both alike in

dignity' equally both families want the same things, leading to

fighting and moral conflict between the families.

Romeo is slandered a 'villain' by Tybalt in Act 1 Scene 5 before he

has done anything wrong. This implies that the feuding has made Tybalt

prejudice against Romeo simply because of he is a Montague.

Tybalt killed Mercutio in a brawl caused by the feuding. This provoked

Romeo into 'fire-eyed fury' which in turn lead to Romeo's banishment,

as Romeo was so 'angry' he killed Tybalt in revenge.

Paris's death could have been totally avoided. If there was no feuding

then Juliet could have told Paris whom she really loved. He would then

not of gone to Juliet's tomb and Romeo wouldn't have seen him and

killed him, this is another death due to the feuding.

If there was no feuding between the two families then the Montagues

could have gone or been invited to the Capulets Party. If they had

have been invited then Romeo would not of insulted Tybalt by going

'the honour of my kin'. Then maybe Tybalt wouldn't have killed

Mercutio when looking to for Romeo.
