Death Penalty Pros and Cons

390 Words1 Page

When I was asked, "are you for or against the death penalty" I thought, that the answer to such a trivial question should be relatively easy. What a naïve conclusion that was. Once I started to do bit of a research, I have found out, that this task is much more complex and complicated, than I thought. First of all, there are two simple answers to this question, yes and no. Behind each of these simple answers is whole "pile" of good and heavy arguments. It would be easy to state, that the society is not developed enough to take such a responsibility, or, killing is always killing. I have to say, that I am for death penalty, and I am about to explain why.

First of all I should venovat pozornost, to what killing means. Killing means to cause death, now lets have a closer look into these words. Killing, murder and execution all leads to death, but the way they are done are very different. On one hand killing is justified when done in self-defense; on the other hand murder is defined as "the unlawful and malicious or premeditated killing of one human being by another" which interferes with the statement " The death penalty is a murder", because the death penalty is lawful, non-malicious and is not delivered by human being, but by the government. Therefore we cannot exchange these terms, they are not morally equivalent, which is likely to be done by opponents of the death penalty.

Second of all, one of commonly used arguments is, that the death penalty does not prevent against violent crime. As a punishment the death penalty is 100% effective. The murderer will never commit such a crime again. On the other hand according to recent studies and analyzes some murderers serving life sentence committed the same crime again in a prison. Out of a sample of 164 paroled Georgia murderers, eight committed willful murders within seven years of release. A study of twenty Oregon murderers released on parole in 1979 found that one (five percent) had committed a homicide within five years of release. If these criminals had been executed, the innocent life would have been save. Therefore the death penalty is effective in order to prevent society against violent crime.
