After her mother’s death, she moved from her home to her father’s home in Ontario, Canada. She is very depressed, she sleeps a lot and she doesn’t want to go to school. She also did not connect to her father because she thinks her father is strange. She felt alone and isolated from the world and she does a lot of things for herself that a mother should do to her child. This caused Jeannette at age 3, to fall into fire and go to the hospital for months. The story of an orphaned child who has to live through vivid tales of murder, mutilation, suicide, and alcoholism from the past to come to a point of self-realization shows the reader how important it is to have knowledge of the past so that they can apply it to the present and eventually guide what course they take in the future. Hopefully, this cycle that often begins and ends with alcoholism will soon be broken.

When thinking about losing a parent the first thing that you would do is clear the thought entirely from your mind. Losing a parent is something that we all do not try to think about until the frightening event actually happens. Death can not be either avoided or reversed. After the agonizing death of her mother, the damaging loss of her intermediate family and husband, Cheryl Strayed seems to have lost everything that she cherished the most including herself. During these traumatic events, Cheryl desperately searches for a cure that can heal her from the pain that she has endured. In her book Wild she explains this healing as “not pretty, but clean” and “not good, but void of regret” (Strayed 36). She says that she was trying to heal by getting the bad out of her system so she could be good again (Strayed 36). Cheryl finds several ways to live with the reality of her transgressions without feeling ashamed allowing these lapses to strengthen her instead of weakening her by becoming a character flaw.

The author Durrow uses a lot of bird imagery in the other main character Jamie's/Brick's narrative. To clarify, Jamies reported,”I saw a bird, he wanted to say. A great egret in the sky. I saw it swoop down below my window. I wanted to see it land….His eyes saw everything wrong. Shadows, mothers, birds”(Durrow 41). The imagery is prevalent precisely because birds can escape and be free of anything that ails them: they can fly away at any moment. In all of the hardships Rachel faces, she often wishes for these very qualities. Similarly, the birds, then, end up symbolizing Rachel's dreams and hope that is weighed down by sadness at the loss of her family. Rachel dreams and hopes of fitting in. In other words, when Rachel's mother and siblings’ fall, they look like birds at first. In details Rachel said,”We take small steps toward the edge. Closer. Closer. The way people look at us. The things that people say. She will protect us from these things too. We are closer still. We fall. Robbie, Mor, Ariel, Then me. As a family, we fall. Many experts would agree that there are different stages of grief. Denial, anger, bargaining, depression, and acceptance are stages that many grief stricken people must endure to manage life after a traumatic death. The story, “The Fly,” by Katherine Mansfield has only a few characters in it, but those few characters show the different stages of grief. The characters illustrate how different the grieving process is when the circumstances of the deaths are the same.
Her family life is depicted with contradictions of order and chaos, love and animosity, conventionality and avant-garde. Although the underlying story of her father’s dark secret was troubling, it lends itself to a better understanding of the family dynamics and what was normal for her family. The author doesn’t seem to suggest that her father’s behavior was acceptable or even tolerable. However, the ending of this excerpt leaves the reader with an undeniable sense that the author felt a connection to her father even if it wasn’t one that was desirable. This is best understood with her reaction to his suicide when she states, “But his absence resonated retroactively, echoing back through all the time I knew him. Maybe it was the converse of the way amputees feel pain in a missing limb.” (pg. 399)
Unresolved issues often follow the parent-child relationship into adulthood. The true balance of the parent-child relationship shifts several times. Children gain maturity and create their own families and then, in the normal course of life, care for their parents as they grow older and need assistance. Nancy was only four years old when her grandmother died. Her grandmother had a big lump on the lower right hand side of her back. The doctors removed it, but it was too late. The tumor had already spread throughout her body. Instead of having a lump on her back, she had a long stitched up incision there. She couldn’t move around; Nancy’s parents had to help her go to the bathroom and do all the simple things that she use to do all by herself. Nancy would ask her grandmother to get up to take her younger sister, Linh, and herself outside so they could play. She never got up. A couple of months later, an ambulance came by their house and took their grandmother away. That was the last time Nancy ever saw her alive. She was in the hospital for about a week and a half. Nancy’s parents never took them to see her. One day, Nancy saw her parents crying and she have never seen them cry before. They dropped Linh and her off at one of their friend’s house. Nancy got mad because she thought they were going shopping and didn’t take her with them.
