In 2004, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) ranked obesity as the number one health risk facing America. Obesity is defined as a body weight that is at least 30 percent over the ideal weight for a specified height, with an individual's body max index (BMI) of more than 30 (Koch, 2013). The CDC estimates there are 400,000 deaths per yeah in the United States and more than 15% of children are obese (Koch, 2013). Baum (2010) asserts that about 30% of adults are classified as obese which is roughly a 100% increase from 25 years ago. This increase can be seen across men, women, race, ethnicity, and socioeconomic status (Baum, 2010). It is very evident that obesity is a growing epidemic which results in severe consequences.
We live in an unprecedented time in history where technology and education have become readily available to the majority of the public. Researchers have investigated why obesity has grown so rapidly, and as someone who struggles with being overweight, this topic concerns me as well. Many explanations have been suggested to explain this rise. The increase in sedentary jobs, rise fast food convenience, and less physical activity are just a few of the variables that have been asserted to increase obesity (Koch, 2013). Due to government and awareness campaigns, Americans currently hold more knowledge of the consequences of obesity than ever before, yet obesity continues to rise (Baum, 2010). While awareness has increased, there have been studies that have shown that not all Americans have equal access to healthy choices, instead, certain areas are inundated with convenience stores and fast food restaurants rather than full service grocery stores and famers' markets (Treuhaft & Karpyn, 2010).
Obesity has risen in all categories of Americans, however, this rise has not been equal among groups. Flegal et al. (2002) found that African-Americans and Hispanics are more likely to be obese than whites. African-Americans have a rate 11% higher than whites and Hispanics are almost 6% more commonly obese. Treuhaft & Karpyn (2010) assert that people living in low-income communities of color have more difficulty accessing healthy foods compared to other neighborhoods. Areas where there is reduced or no access to affordable and healthy food are called food deserts (Treuhaft & Karpyn, 2010). Low-income neighborhoods are shown to have a lack of healthy and high quality foods in stores, more liquor and convenience stores, and a lack of transportation to access quality stores further away.
Many in the U.S., today, try to eat well,balanced, meals to order to maintain a healthy lifestyle. They do so by purchasing their food at farmers markets or making their own meals, so their food isn’t processed or genetically modified. Even though people are trying to maintain health in order to live long lives, without medical complications, many don’t have the opportunity to pursue life like this. In “Research shows food deserts more abundant in minority neighborhoods,” the author, Kelly Brooks, portrays an anecdote and logical reasoning, from Kelly Bower’s research, to thoroughly describe the food deserts in poor minority neighborhoods and how this issue needs to be repaired.
Obesity is a rising problem in the United States. With obesity rates on the rise something must be done to prevent this massive issue. There are ways to help including educating at young ages, improving nutrition facts at restaurants, and providing more space for citizens to get physically active.
In Chicago, food deserts are located on the south and west sides. Unfortunately, the south and west sides are mainly where black people live (Illinois Advisory Committee, 2011). Over 60 million people are obese in the world today. The socioeconomic statuses of the Americans play a major part in the obesity rates across the country. People with higher incomes are less likely to be obese than people with lower incomes. One in every seven preschool-aged children living in lower income areas are obese (Center for Disease Control and Prevention). A 2008 study showed that obesity is highest among American Indian and Alaska Native (21.2 percent) and Hispanic Americans (18.5 percent) children, and it is lowest among white (12.6 percent), Asian or Pacific Islander (12.3 percent), and black (11.8 percent) children (Get America Fit).
The American Medical Association (AMA) has declared obesity a disease. Obesity means that an individual has too much body weight that could possibly cause a health risk. Having a body-mass index (BMI) of 35 or higher makes an individual morbidly obese. A healthy BMI would be from 20 to 24.9. The United States has one of the highest obesity rates in the world with an estimated of 36% of American adults suffering from it. It is important to not label obesity as a disease because it leads 78 million adults and 12 million children in America into feeling helpless, and takes them away from believing it’s importance as a condition that is the result of eating too much and living sedentary lifestyles.
Obesity has become an epidemic in today’s society. Today around 50% of America is now considered to be over weight. Fast-food consumption has been a major contributor to the debate of the twenty-first century. Chapter thirteen, titled “Is Fast-Food the New Tobacco,” in the They Say I Say book, consists of authors discussing the debate of fast-food’s link to obesity. Authors debate the government’s effects on the fast-food industry, along with whether or not the fast-food industry is to blame for the rise in obesity throughout America. While some people blame the fast food industry for the rise in obesity, others believe it is a matter of personal responsibility to watch what someone eats and make sure they get the proper exercise.
Obesity has been identified as one of the risk factors affecting directly and indirectly the health outcome of the population. Even though many approaches and programs have been conducted in order to reduce the obesity rate, this health issue is still a big headache and keeps being put on the table. As Healthy People 2020 indicated, in the period from 1988-1994 to 2009-2010, the age adjusted obesity rate among U.S adults aged 20 and over increased from 22.8% to 35.7%, which means increased by 57% while the obesity rate among children and teenagers from 2 to 19 years old increased from 10% to approximately 17%, witnessing the increase of 69% ("Nutrition, physical activity," 2013). Obesity has impact both on economic and health of the nation. Obesity is the risk factor of serious chronic diseases, including heart disease, stroke, type II diabetes, certain kinds of cancer, and other leading causes of preventable deaths ("Overweight and obesity," 2013). Moreover, obesity continues to be economic burden in terms of medical costs for either public or private payers up to $147 billion per year which increased from 6.5% to 9.1% (Finkelstein et al, 2009). In 2008, medical spending per capita for the obese or obesity related health issues is $1,429 per year, as 42% higher than “those of normal weight” (Finkelstein et al, 2009, p.8).

Obesity is the result of fat accumulated over time due to the lack of a balanced diet and exercise. An adult with a BMI (body mass index) higher than thirty percent is considered obese (Whitney & Rolfes, 2011, pg. 271).
Since 1970, the obesity rates in America have more than doubled. Currently two-thirds of (roughly 150 million) adults in the United States are either overweight, or obese (Food Research and Action Center). According to the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, “overweight is defined as a body mass index (BMI) greater than 25 whereas obesity is defined as a BMI greater than 30.” There are numerous factors that contribute to obesity such as: biological, behavioral and cultural influences (Food Research and Action Center). While these factors all have a large role in obesity, there is no factor with as great of an influence as poverty.

By taking a stand against the rise of obesity, America’s bodies will be in healthy condition, and are able to be the positive motivation for others to follow. Once more people choose to live a happy and healthful life, the decrease of obesity will begin to show. The solution to solving the issue of obesity in America can be possible by: eating healthier foods, getting proper exercise, and setting boundaries on what fast-food industries can sell to customers. People need to get up and get moving for the problem of obesity and its trail of nasty effects will consume the healthy way of life everyone knows today.
