Dealing with Stress...The Genentech Way

Every large organization has its own way to deal with “Stress”. This case explains the Genentech way of dealing stress. Genentech is the first biotech company and was founded in 1976 by Dr. Herbert W. Boyer, a biochemist, and Robert A. Swanson, a venture capitalist. Like any other major large corporation Genentech aspired to be the leading biotechnology company. It has been recognized to be a very people friendly company for its Human resources policies and its human therapeutics.

In 2007, Genentech CEO Arthur Levinson, wanted to make his company a great place to work and recognized by the industry and magazines. This desire made Genentech adapt some culture that helped the employees to reduce stress and made the company one of the top 100 companies to work in lot of US magazines. The leadership team, management, practices and their policies has made them one of the best places to work. They inspire their employees to work hard by recognizing each ones contribution. There are programs that provide employees with a unique workplace as well as diverse opportunities to enhance their personal learning. The company helps them to achieve personal and professional goals and enable them to manage the difficult task of work-life balance. The company also promotes the emotional connection of the employees and the patient that inspires them to work harder and gives them a boost in their creativity and a satisfaction in life. There are many other benefit programs for the employees like tuition-assistance, gRide (Genentech), time off, etc. The company provides a physical work environment where employees collaborate, share knowledge both face-to-face and via e-communication. ...es needs and programs that reduce stress at workplace have proved to be the key factor in Genentech’s success. Working in a larger biotech company, Amgen I can relate to all these programs. In my company some of these programs work well but since the company is twice as big as Genentech some of the programs are not sustainable.

It would be a dream-come true for any employee to work in an ideal company with no stress.
