“Blindness cuts people from things, deafness cuts people from people”, quoted by Helen Keller. This quote inspired me to pursue a career of being a Deaf Education Teacher because it is the best for the Deaf student to be taught by a Deaf teacher. However, the career of Deaf Education Teachers is a challenging career, because it requires a lot of time and dedication. This research paper will describe the career of Deaf Education Teachers, what is required to become a successful teacher, and the impact this career has on society. Knowing the history and the background of Deaf culture is very important to be able to understand Deaf culture. Deaf Education Teachers in America date back to the mid 1800’s when Thomas Gallaudet and Laurent Clerc came to America from France. Clerc and Gallaudet wanted Deaf children to be able to attend school, so they founded the first Deaf school in America. The Deaf school is now known as America School for the Deaf. It was established in Hartford, Connecticut in 1817. This was where Deaf teachers began and thrived. In the next ten years more than 30 Deaf schools were established. Between the years 1840 and 1912, more than 40% of the Deaf school teachers were Deaf. Teachers taught using French Sign Language, which was the language of Laurent Clerc. During the late 1800’s, Alexander Graham Bell, famous for his invention of the telephone, began a new movement for Education of the Deaf. A.G. Bell believed that Deaf students should be taught how to talk, not sign, like they had been since Gallaudet and Clerc came to America. He proved that the oral method, teaching Deaf kids to talk, was the best way by showing that they became successful, unlike the students who used sign language. Mark Drolsbaugh, the author of Deaf Again, was born to deaf parents at a time when the deaf population didn’t have and weren’t given the same availability to communication assistance as they have today. He was born hearing and seemed to have perfect hearing up until the first grade when he started having trouble understanding what was being said but was too young to understand what was happening. (Drolsbaugh 8).
The School was not originally formed for the benefit of the deaf students. In 1854, a man named Platt H. Skinner came to Washington DC with 5 deaf, orphaned students. Skinner tried to convince rich men to put money into a school for deaf children. In order to gain more money, he collected 11 more deaf students from their parents from the DC area. Unfortunately, Skinner was not focused on the best intentions for the children.

I believe that this is important because if a young Deaf/hard of hearing student has a hard time learning what will their view on learning become? I also don’t agree with the fact that the article suggests the use of MCE (Manually coded English). Manually coded English, is similar to ASL But, follows the grammatical setup of English. Whereas ASL has its own grammatical setup. I believe that a Deaf/C.O.D.A teacher is the best opportunity for the students. Young Deaf students should be taught by Deaf/C.O.D.A teachers because ASL is most likely the students first language. Consequently ASL would be the easiest way to learn English. From the perspective of a Deaf person, ¨I had a hard time learning English, I had both a Deaf teacher and a hearing teacher. I learned English easiest from the Deaf teacher” (S. White, personal communication, February 16, 2016). Also, young Deaf students should be taught by Deaf teachers because Deaf/C.O.D.A are good language models. Language models are important to have because who else would be a good model for ASL? With the deaf community having a signed language that is natural and practical to them, they were able to learn and communicate with others. So it boggles my mind to have someone like Alexander Graham Bell, who had a deaf mother and wife, and a Scottish immigrant would want to stifle and change the deaf community to fit in with everyone and not have the tools to make them who they are. In the following chapters, there is an extensive amount of knowledge to learn about how Deaf culture is involved in our modern world. The pages assigned give us an outlook of how Deaf people are treated in our daily life, and how we should learn from it. Its gives a clear line between what are myths and what are facts, to those who are curious about the Deaf community or have specific questions. This book has definitely taught me new things that I could put to good use in the near future. In specific chapters, my mind really opened up to new ideas and made me think hard about questions, like “why don’t some Deaf people trust hearing people,” or “do we need another ‘Deaf president now’ revolution?” I realized many new things in the course of reading this book, and have recommended this to my family.

Both of Philip’s parents attended oral schools. Her father later learned signed through his friends who were active signers. Her mother learned sign language when she met her father at age 18. By the time Marie was born, her mother, age 22, did not sign fluently. When Marie was old enough to go to school her parents endeavored to send her to Clarke School for the Deaf, a very famous oral school. Here she was rejected because she knew how to sign.
The famous deaf person that I chose is Laurent Clerc being the first deaf teacher of the deaf in America. He was born December 26, 1785 in France and he had become deaf at the age of one. He was involved in an incident when he was left in his high chair for a few minutes by a fire and happened to fall off leading him to burn the side of his face. However, because of the scar that got left behind from the burn had permanently made name sign for him which was two fingers brushed against his right cheek. At the age of seven his parents believed that his deafness could be treated with injections but, in the end learned there was no cure. During his childhood he did not attend any schooling to learn how to write nor read. His family communicated with him through gestures because, he didn’t know sign language as well.

“It would have been difficult to find a happier child than I was as I lay in my crib at the close of that eventful day and lived over the joys it had brought me, and for the first time longed for a new day to come. I had now the key to all language, and I was eager to learn to use it” (Keller 146). The ability to actually comprehend words and associate those words to thoughts and feelings rejuvenated her. Keller was reborn that day, with a new ‘vision’ and a new direction. What started that day, culminated into Keller becoming the first deaf person to earn a bachelors degree. She learnt to speak and ‘hear’ by following the movements of people’s lips. Keller was extremely hardworking and she personified willpower and diligence by patiently untangling the taboos of society to prove her critics wrong.
So today, I have shared with you my journey in deafness. Being deaf can be hard, but it is not the end of the world. I can do what anyone else can do such as talk, play sports and hang out with friends. Every person’s journey is different. For me the key to success is perseverance.
