DBQ - Democracy in Colonial America Essay Colonists were able to practice democracy in the colonies. Democratic principles of equality, individual or human rights, and regular and fair elections were found throughout the colonies. Since England was far away, colonists practiced self-government. In colonial America, democracy was a work in progress with democratic and undemocratic features. An example of a democratic feature is equality. Equality means that all individuals/citizens are equal, and should be valued equally. In Document 3, “The Fundamental Orders of Connecticut (1639)”, the governor does not need to be higher than the citizens. The citizens should have a fair leader, that treats them all equally.
