Symbolism of the Rain

In the novel Day of Tears, by Julius Lester tells the readers about the Weeping Time, one of the

largest slave auctions that ever happened in America, and the stories of the people affected by it, using the rain as a symbol of how important that event was in his novel. The rain changes, however, throughout the story to match the mood of the setting, and it appears to help the reader empathize with the characters through the story’s telling. The rain seems to occur most with Emma, one of Pierce Butler’s slaves, who had taken care of his two daughters Sarah and Frances until she was sold to Mistress Henfield, a widow from Kentucky who wanted a slave to take care of her two year old daughter, Ruth, when she was about twelve years old. Every important milestone with her life seems to have it occur while it’s raining, from the auction to running away to moving to Nova Scotia, Canada.

The rain seems to follow Emma around, crying at the auction for all the slaves sold away from their home, making a distraction for Emma, Joe, Charles, Winnie, and their baby to run away. It even drizzles sorrowfully as Joe and Emma have to leave their home in Philadelphia to remain free without the fear of being returned to slavery. In the end though, everything happened for a reason. After the war, Emma got a letter from Sarah, and Emma’s daughter, named Sarah after her, wrote a response for Emma because she was illiterate. They kept in touch and longed to visit each other, but the time it would take for such a journey would keep both of them from their families too long. In the end, Emma lives a happy life filled with children and grandchildren, and tells her granddaughter her story so she can use it on a report for
