Mark Benioff of Salesforce.com once said, "The world is being re-shaped by the convergence of social, mobile, cloud, big data, community and other powerful forces. The combination of these technologies unlocks an incredible opportunity to connect everything together in a new way and is dramatically transforming the way we live and work."

These are powerful words and so true of the world that we currently live in. Still, I also understand how hard it is to let go of the world we once lived in and take a giant step into the unknown future. Essentially, this is what we are asking you to do when we request that you embrace data driven marketing.

This is key when it comes to delivering the right products and services to the right group of people. When we finally begin to understand why someone does something, we will eventually be able to insert ourselves into the equation.

Data can give you quite a bit of information about your customers. By examining it, you will be able to begin to see patterns and learn the habits of your customers. This could mean that you are able to provide the correct number of products at the perfect time instead of having a shortfall or being left with additional stock long after interest has fallen in the product.

Being able to provide exactly what your customers are looking for is one of the best ways to gain and retain customers. You will also begin to see that customer satisfaction is climbing, which makes it much easier to cross-sell and up-sell and thus increase your profitability.

We might think of it as getting to know someone, but this really was allowing him to have a glimpse into her life. Not only would the young woman be likely to return to the store in the future, but the shop-owner would know that there was a particular product that she needed in order to care for her household.

Fast forward to 2015 and we now see this same scenario being played out, except in a very unique way. Instead of building individual relationships with only a handful of customers, technology has now given us the opportunity to build relationships with countless people.
