On May 27, 1894 in St. Mary’s County, Maryland, Anne Bond Dashiell gave birth to Samuel Dashiell Hammett, now known as Dashiell Hammett. Moreover, Mrs. Hammett originated from Baltimore and Philadelphia, where he disengaged himself from school at age thirteen, to help provide for his family. Later, he relocated to San Francisco, California, prior to enlisting in the U.S. Army during World War I. Unfortunately, Dashiell Hammett was afflicted with the Spanish flu as well as contracted tuberculosis. Much of his time in the Army was spent as a patient at Cushman Hospital, where he would verge upon a nurse, Josephine Dolan, whom he married on July 7, 1921. Mr. Hammett and his wife gave birth to two daughters, changing the course of their life and, in turn, the entire face of crime fiction. Hammett occupied a string of odd jobs, specifically, a freight clerk, stevedore, timekeeper, yardman, and railroad worker before joining the renowned Pinkerton National Detective Agency in 1915. His detective work prevailed when he moved to California, before joining the Army. In the long run, Mr. Hammett was forced to quit detective work, due to his health. He later turned the experience into short, riveting detective stories. When Pearl Harbor was bombed during World War II, Dashiell Hammett pulled strings to once again be admitted into the Army. After the war, he returned to political activism, in New York. Trouble with the law involving Mr. Hammett’s communist associates led him to serve a six-month jail sentence, and his fortunes took a turn for the worse. In 1948, he was released and then he joined the Air Force. Even in the military he managed to cause trouble. He was sent to the military prison for assault many times. He also got arrested in 1950 for being absent without leave. Believe it or not, he still got an honorable discharge four years after he had joined the service. After he was released from the Air Force, he went back home to Massachusetts.

John Dillinger was born on June 22, 1903, in Indianapolis. Three years later his mother died; his father remarried six years afterwards, but Dillinger resented his stepmother. Being raised by a very strict father, who invoked disciplinary extremes, Dillinger became a troublemaker. Dillinger quit school and got a job, but quickly got bored and decided to stay out all night. His father was concerned that city life was corrupting his son, so he decided to move his family to Indiana. However, the move made no difference, since Dillinger began to act the same as he had in the city. After a “break with his father and trouble with the law” Dillinger enlisted in the Navy (“Famous Cases,” n.d). In the Navy, Dillinger got into trouble and decided to leave his ship and move to Indiana, where he married 16-year-old Beryl Hovius in 1924. Both Dillinger and Hovius moved to Indianapolis with a “dazzling dream of bright lights and excitement” (“Famous Cases,” n.d). However, Dillinger had no luck finding work due to the Depression, and joined the “town pool shark, Ed Singleton” in search of easy money.

The empire of Japan had attacked the United States’ Pacific Fleet based in Pearl Harbor. For months the US Intelligence community, as well as others around the world, had been intercepting and decoding transmissions from mainland Japan to their diplomats and spies in the US. We had cracked their Purple Code, and knew exactly what military intelligence was being transmitted back and forth. The Dutch also cracked Purple and informed our government of the Japanese plan and were shocked to hear reports that we were taken by surprised. Even more disturbing, months before the attack a British double agent, Dusko Popov, codenamed Tricycle, turned over to the F.B.I. detailed plans of the Japanese air raid, which he had obtained from the Germans. The government had the information, and did nothing with it.
When he was fifteen years old, his mother died from appendicitis. From fifteen years of age to his college years, he lived in an all-white neighborhood. From 1914-1917, he shifted from many colleges and academic courses of study as well as he changed his cultural identity growing up. On December 7, 1941, American citizens stretched over the country were shocked at the horrific devastation of the Pearl Harbor attack from the Japanese. Because of the bombing in Hawaii, 2,600 citizens were killed ,8 naval ships were destroyed, and more than 100 planes were brought down without a warning. This incident had urged both men and women to put a foot in the door and join the war effort of World War II. Under President Franklin D. Roosevelt’s administration the atomic bomb was being developed. After Roosevelt died, his vice president Harry Truman was appointed President of the United States. Truman was never informed about the bombs development until an emergency cabinet meeting (Kuznick 9). Truman had to make the fatal decision on whether the bomb was to be dropped on Japan. With the idea of going to war, Truman had to think about the lives of the thousand American soldiers. The American soldiers had begun using the method of island hopping, because the bomb was not available. The idea of dropping a bomb was that the war itself could possibly end in its earliest points. The dropping of the atomic bomb could also justify the money spent on the Manhattan Project (Donohue 1). With a quote by Franklin D. On December 7th, 1941, approximately 360 Japanese aircrafts attacked the U.S. Naval Base in Pearl Harbor, Oahu, Hawaii1. Americans took the Pearl Harbor attack as a personal blow, and changed the minds of all who still believed in American neutrality in the war. The U.S. Congress declared war on Japan on December 8, 1941, officially entering the U.S. into World War II. With the start of the war, came many changes in the everyday life of ordinary Americans. There were many shortages in household items, such as flashlights, batteries, waffle irons, plastic toys, and tea2. On the East Coast, the supply of gasoline was reduced by 20%, and the rationing of many household items and food was introduced into many homes of American citizens3. One of the biggest changes in ordinary American life during this time was brought about by the draft, which resulted in the loss of roughly 12,209,240 American men by 1945 who had gone to join the armed forces4. During World War II, the number of men away at war resulted in America being in desperate need of more factory hands to manufacture weapons and supplies for the troops and of service in the military itself. George best was an athlete that played soccer for Manchester United and Northern Ireland national team. Best was suffering from alcoholism throughout his whole life which lead to many issues including his death. Around 1984 best was given a 3 month sentence to prison for getting caught drunk driving and for also assaulting a police officer. Later in best life he was diagnosed with severe liver damage around 2000. In 2001 George was taken to the hospital and then found out he had pneumonia. In London of August 2002 George best had a liver transplant in kings college hospital. Due to best liver transplant there were controversy because of him being an alcoholic. He was found drinking and driving once again which lead to a 20 month banned. later in 2002 he was taken to the hospital due to a kidney infection because of the immunosuppressive drugs that were use to prevent his body from rejecting his transplanted liver. In 2005 best was dead due to lung infection and multiple organ failure.
Eva Heyman was born February 13, 1931, Nagyvarad, Hungary. In 1933-1939, Eva’s parents Agnes (her mother) and Bela (her father) divorced. Eva was the only child. Her mother remarried and moved to Budapest. She rarely saw her father, who lived on the other side of the city. She lived with her grandparents on the border between Romania and Hungary near the pharmacy they owned. Nearly one-fifth of the city’s population was Jewish. The beginning of the Holocaust had little impact on their lives.
Vincent Leaphart was born July 26, 1931 in the Mantua neighborhood in West Philadelphia. When Vincent was in his teens, his mother died and Vincent placed blame on the hospital that treated her. Shortly after that tragic event, Vincent joined the army as a foot soldier in the Korean War. Both events had an enormous contribution to Vincent’s resentment towards American Society (Dickson 14).
