Dandelions grow in our backyards every year, but all we see are small yellow weeds that take control of the grass and cause a nuisance. What many are unaware of is their actual uses and how helpful they were throughout history. Dandelion is grown in Europe, Asia, North America, and South America. It grows in many places such as in gardens, on mountains, and it is sometimes found in some health food markets, or as a freeze-dried herb. Part of the reason they grow in many places is because they aren’t very picky. They grow in sunlight or shade, and will accept most climates even though they prefer to be grown in warmer climates. However, they will not tolerate a hot-dry wind, meaning that they need protection in harsh, hot climates, or they can grow poorly which can affect its taste. Dandelions are harvested for best results in the middle of spring and sometimes the summer. What is unique about dandelions is that they have a very deep root which stay alive and spread during the winter. We wouldn’t know as much about the weed without knowing its history. Dandelion grows on many different continents, so it is used in many different ways. It was first discovered in medieval Persia in the 10th or 11th century, and have been used in Chinese traditional medicine for over a thousand years. Taraxacum officinale is the most common form of dandelion. There are a few other variations of dandelion, like Taraxacum albidum, a white-flowering Japanese dandelion, Taraxacum californicum, the endangered California dandelion, and Taraxacum kok-saghyz, a Russian dandelion which produces rubber. Dandelion is edible, so it was first used for food. Dandelions may seem like pesky weeds, but they actually have many uses. Instead of using pesticides to destroy them all, pick them instead and make a glass of dandelion-root tea. Dandelions have been used as a medicinal plant for thousands of years, and were first used by the Chinese for medical purposes. They are found in many places and have many active ingredients that allow it to have certain medical purposes. There are some warnings of using dandelion as a medicinal herb, such as allergic reactions and stomach pains. We think danelion is a good thing to use, because of its health benefits and few warnings, as well as being easy to use and easy to incorporate into daily life foods.
