Dancemor; More than a dive bar! Dancemor; most people in Cedar Rapids, Iowa has heard of this place. Even more have stories to tell about this hole in the wall dive bar. Out in the middle of a nowhere small town called Swisher, for me this place is where I have learned that people are not what they wear or how they look. It ended up being a place where I spent my weekends in the awkward stage between adulthood and adolescence. The place where others could be as drunk and wild as they want or they could be out for a quiet night of dancing. For me it was the one place I could be free to be whomever I wanted to be without judgment being passed from others as well as making lifelong friends. With an awning that creates the opening to the doorway, the two wood pillars that held it up. You can walk in and heard the thuds of the drums and steel guitar playing either modern to classic country or 80’s music depending on the band. Walk up to the window to pay your $10 and go in through the surprisingly light double doors into the dancehall. A group of people ranging in age and size wear similar yet different clothes, denim jeans with cowboy boots and plaid shirts. Some of the boys would wear a cowboy hat or ball cap, and the ring in their back pocket from the cans of Skoal chew or a square form from cigarettes. The girls with their make-up and hair all done up looking like movie stars or teenagers with the hooker blue eye shadow, hoping to catch the eye of that one cute boy. Well, it was very hard for me to go out, as my legs felt heavy to walk through the front door. After a long struggle, then I forced myself to go to a nightclub. My friend recommended me to go to 1015 Folsom nightclub because the songs are funkier. The club is located at Folsom street, downtown San Francisco.

On September 2nd, I experienced one of the most enjoyable folk dances, known as contra dance, at the First Baptist Church. Due to my cultural and religious background, this experience was new to me and full of mystery. However, it led me to wonder how social music, especially contra dance, is powerful enough letting strangers dance and communicate with each other in a perfect harmony.
We often wonder why we act a certain way in certain places and there must be a reason why? Why is that we act a certain way when we go to concerts or when we go to the library? Through a showcase of articles, we will discover the reason why we act a particular way. This is because we are entering a liminal space that has its own set of rules and boundaries where people can act out differently than the social norms because it is acceptable. We will specifically be looking at how the punks and ravers of the ‘70s entered the liminal space and what they experienced while they were in that space, along with a ritual clown from a Native American tribe.

During the ancient period civilizations sentient decisions began to be made with regard to dance. Other periods that had an impact on dance were the medieval period, the renaissance period, and the contemporary period. ...vy urban dance tracks accompanying the rides are making my heart wallop so hard that I can’t stop jumping up and down with the unbalanced rhythm. As the night gets eerie and cold, the deafening screams and screeches slowly gets quieter and tranquil. The rides come to a halt. One by one the lights turn off leaving the twinkling stars to once again regain their glory. Exhausted, flushed faces rush past each other over the drink cans and crisp packets that lay lazily embedded and forgotten about on the underfoot of the mosaic of feet of people rushing to reach the exit before the huge congestion takes place. The humidity of the swarms of people starts to make my skin feel clammy. My parents, my friend and I follow the rest of the exhausted crowd towards the large gates. I clutch my new friend to my chest and glide happily out of the gates, into the mysterious darkness.
“Sex and the Social Dance” was a streaming video which examined the sexuality of social dances around the world. Regardless of geographical location or decade of popularity, dance conveyed social values. The Northern Territory is known for its culturally diverse population and some would say it is the ‘multicultural hub’ of Australia. With all of these cultures comes distinctive customs and traditions. Throughout history dance has been used to help people develop a sense of identity, the younger generations are also taught social patterns and values through the different dances. The significance of these traditional dances was to reinforce and celebrate cultural law and practices including the celebration of the passage from child to adulthood or spiritual worship. The predominantly Western culture in Australia often causes minority groups to struggle for recognition regarding their beliefs and traditions. She disregarded the refined technical Classical ballet and thus the concept of Contemporary dance was born. This style incorporates movements where the body moves freely and doesn’t have restrictions, embodying raw human emotion. Pioneers of contemporary dance comprise of the internationally known Isadora Duncan, Martha Graham and Merce Cunningham (The Conversation, 2014, online) + (Bibliography, 2012, online). On the night of the DancePlus performance, I saw numerous little performances. There were six of them in total and the one I had most reactions and favors to is the last one of the first half, which is called Swampin. It was choreographed by John Evans with additional material by Oluwadamilare Ayoride, Jennifer Payan and surprisingly, the dancers. Usually what I would expect from a piece of dance performance is choreographers dominating the process of being creative on the grounds o f coming up dance moves. However, this time, it is nice to see how the dancer actually participating first hand in the creating process of the whole performance which would definitely benefit the quality of the dance, since the dancers would their own choreography
